Dropbox has agreed to buy Tigris Data for approximately $350 million in cash as it introduces DBX Agent Cloud, an object-storage offering for developers building AI applications. The deal is not complete: the [November 3 agreement](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1467623/000146762326000056/dbx-20261103.htm) targets a fourth-quarter close, subject to customary conditions and purchase-price adjustments.

## The big change

- Developers will be able to buy storage independently.
- Supported applications use an S3-compatible interface.
- Further capabilities remain planned.

## A storage layer for AI applications

Dropbox says the planned acquisition will accelerate its expansion into AI infrastructure. Agent Cloud begins with standalone, S3-compatible object storage. The company points to datasets, model artifacts and media that AI applications may need across compute environments.

In [Amazon’s description of S3](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonS3/latest/userguide/Welcome.html), a bucket holds objects, each consisting of data and descriptive metadata; a key identifies an object within the bucket. This gives developers a way to store and retrieve application data without organizing it as a traditional shared file drive.

Dropbox says supported S3 tools can work with its offering. Compatibility does not establish identical behavior for every feature or application.

## What is available and what is planned

Dropbox plans filesystem and content-processing capabilities for documents and media, according to its [November 5 release](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1467623/000146762326000056/november2026exhibit991.htm). Dropbox told [The New Stack](https://thenewstack.io/dropbox-acquires-tigris-s3-alternative/) that it would share integration and availability details as plans develop; the publication reported no launch date had been provided.

Tigris describes its existing service as distributed, S3-compatible object storage on its [pricing page](https://www.tigrisdata.com/pricing/). The New Stack reports that, if the deal closes, Tigris technology is expected to underpin Agent Cloud.
