Demonstrators marched in Helsinki and other Finnish cities on November 7, seeking a pause in data-centre construction.

## The big change

- The Finnish actions followed Amsterdam’s November 6 protest.
- Participants seek a construction pause.
- Finland’s grid operator expects electricity demand to grow.

## From the railway square to Parliament

[Yle reported](https://yle.fi/a/74-20255647) that the Helsinki march passed Google’s office to Parliament. Police estimated 1,300 participants around 2:20 p.m. and reported no disruption. Yle reported speeches outside Parliament. A separate Yle report cited organizers’ estimate of 1,500.

Yle also reported actions in Tampere, Lahti, Oulu, Jyväskylä and Turku. Participants say regulation has not kept pace with projects.

The [Stop Dirty Data Centres](https://stopdirtydatacentres.eu/en/) campaign seeks a European pause on large data-centre development. Its Helsinki listing called for a moratorium on Finnish data-centre projects. Listings elsewhere do not verify attendance.

BIG CHANGE [previously reported](https://bigchange.ai/blog/amsterdam-microsoft-data-centre-protest) November 6 entry at a Microsoft construction site in Amsterdam. The Finnish marches had separate participants and circumstances.

## The electricity question

Data centres support many digital services, including AI. The question for communities is how new large electricity users fit into a system that must balance supply and demand across the year.

In August, Finland’s grid operator [Fingrid](https://www.fingrid.fi/en/news/news/2026/electricity-consumption-is-set-to-increase-sharply--more-balancing-power-will-also-be-needed/) said planned data-centre projects with signed connection agreements had a combined final capacity of nearly five gigawatts, based on developers’ information. That figure describes planned capacity, not electricity already consumed or a guarantee that every project will be completed. Fingrid also said growing demand would require adequate generation and balancing flexibility.

The International Energy Agency’s separate [2025 analysis](https://www.iea.org/reports/energy-and-ai/energy-supply-for-ai) projected global data-centre electricity demand rising substantially by 2030. A global projection does not determine the impact of a Finnish site or settle the protesters’ claims about it. The reports do not establish a policy change.
