Hemmingway-1 is a 27 billion parameter writing model whose publisher offers downloadable weights. A technically capable reader with suitable Linux GPU hardware can try one response locally using a pinned checkpoint. This guide gives two current routes: a vLLM server and a separate Transformers script. The steps come from documentation checked on 22 October 2026; BIG CHANGE has not downloaded the weights, started either runtime or observed a reply.

## The big change

- **What changed:** The publisher makes a writing-focused checkpoint available for local inference. A reader can send a prompt to their own server or script while keeping the model revision fixed.
- **Why it matters:** This gives authorized users control over where the generation request runs. It also puts GPU setup, storage, license checks and response verification in their hands. The local request in this guide does not call a hosted model API; installing packages and downloading weights still use the network.
- **What to watch:** The useful result is a nonempty new assistant response from the reader's machine. That proves this setup generated text, while the suitability of a message still depends on reading and checking it. Runtime support for the model architecture is documented, but this exact checkpoint has not been run by BIG CHANGE.

## 1. Check rights and machine requirements

The [publisher's model card](https://huggingface.co/HemmingwayAI/Hemmingway-1/tree/1a5f363a3dd2d1cc456c28b8abbb403b9555efaf) currently uses `HemmingwayAI/Hemmingway-1`. An older publisher README links `Altworld/Hemmingway-1`, which redirects to that same repository. Use the immutable revision `1a5f363a3dd2d1cc456c28b8abbb403b9555efaf` in every model or tokenizer load below. Preserve the spelling **Hemmingway**. A separately uploaded model with different license metadata is outside this guide.

Read the [publisher's license](https://github.com/lukeckprobierts/Hemmingway-1/blob/f6f06612edc81131cf23503f38d96b4589af27e8/LICENSE) and establish that your intended use and inputs are authorized before downloading. The publisher labels this checkpoint CC BY-NC 4.0 and says commercial use needs a separate agreement. Those terms do not establish permission for a particular reader or project. Use text you are entitled to process on your machine.

Use a Linux host with a GPU and driver supported by your chosen runtime. Check the [vLLM 0.32.0 GPU installation requirements](https://docs.vllm.ai/en/v0.32.0/getting_started/installation/gpu/) or, for the script path, select a GPU-enabled PyTorch build with the [PyTorch installation selector](https://pytorch.org/get-started/locally/) for your platform and driver. vLLM 0.32.0 requires Python 3.11 through 3.14. Check `python3 --version` and your GPU/driver information before installing. This article cannot name a GPU that is guaranteed to fit the checkpoint.

The Hub lists 13 safetensor files totaling **54,641,496,528 bytes**. Leave additional disk space for packages and caches. That figure describes stored weights, not a tested VRAM or RAM minimum. Model loading and generation need further memory, and the published 262,144-token maximum context is no promise that a given machine can serve it. Hardware purchase or rental, storage, electricity and network use can cost money; there is no paid hosted inference call in these examples. The publisher has not supplied a tested hardware configuration for this checkpoint.

Choose **one** of the following routes. They use separate environments because vLLM 0.32.0 requires Transformers below 5.20.0, while the script uses Transformers 5.20.2.

## 2A. Start a local vLLM server and request a response

This prebuilt-wheel route is for a Linux **NVIDIA CUDA 12.9** setup. Before running it, check your GPU's compute capability and driver against the [vLLM 0.32.0 NVIDIA requirements](https://docs.vllm.ai/en/v0.32.0/getting_started/installation/gpu/); the listed compute capability is 7.5 or higher, which does not establish that the checkpoint will fit in memory. Stop if your GPU or driver cannot use this wheel. AMD ROCm and Intel XPU have different versioned installation paths; do not reuse the NVIDIA install command on them. In a Linux shell, create a fresh environment with a supported Python version. The versioned [vLLM server options](https://docs.vllm.ai/en/v0.32.0/cli/serve/) document the revision, model alias, context limit and host flags used here.

```sh
python3 --version
python3 -m venv .venv-hemmingway-vllm
. .venv-hemmingway-vllm/bin/activate
python -m pip install --upgrade pip
python -m pip install 'vllm==0.32.0' --extra-index-url https://download.pytorch.org/whl/cu129
vllm download-kernels
python -m pip show vllm transformers torch
vllm serve HemmingwayAI/Hemmingway-1 --revision 1a5f363a3dd2d1cc456c28b8abbb403b9555efaf --max-model-len 4096 --served-model-name HemmingwayAI/Hemmingway-1 --host 127.0.0.1
```

The server stays on `127.0.0.1`. Its `4096` context setting is an initial example, not a measured fit or a quality guarantee. If your supported machine has several GPUs, the vLLM documentation also provides `--tensor-parallel-size N`; set `N` from the GPUs actually available and check the load result. Keep the server running and open a second Linux shell for this complete request. It asks for a neutral greeting; the code prints the actual returned content and supplies no invented example reply.

```sh
python3 - <<'PY'
import json
from urllib.request import Request, urlopen
payload = {
    "model": "HemmingwayAI/Hemmingway-1",
    "messages": [{"role": "user", "content": "Write one brief, neutral greeting."}],
    "max_tokens": 512,
}
request = Request(
    "http://127.0.0.1:8000/v1/chat/completions",
    data=json.dumps(payload).encode("utf-8"),
    headers={"Content-Type": "application/json"},
    method="POST",
)
with urlopen(request, timeout=300) as response:
    status = response.status
    body = json.load(response)
message = body["choices"][0]["message"]["content"]
assert 200 <= status < 300 and isinstance(message, str) and message.strip(), body
print(message)
PY
```

The [vLLM Chat Completions interface](https://docs.vllm.ai/en/v0.32.0/serving/online_serving/openai_compatible_server/) accepts the model alias configured above. This path passes only when this request receives HTTP success and a nonempty assistant `content` string. If loading fails, save the exact error and your installed versions. An out-of-memory error can be investigated with a shorter context limit or a supported multi-GPU setup; it does not identify a universal minimum. For an endpoint error, confirm that the server is still running and inspect `http://127.0.0.1:8000/v1/models` for the served ID. A blank `content`, absent `choices`, or text confined to a reasoning field does not complete the stated writing-response check. Inspect the full JSON and the generation limit before retrying.

## 2B. Run a separate Transformers script

This route loads the same pinned checkpoint directly. Before downloading its weights, verify that your GPU and selected PyTorch backend support bfloat16 (BF16), the precision recorded in this checkpoint's configuration. Create and activate its *own* Linux environment **before** installing the GPU-enabled PyTorch build selected for your system. Then install the versioned libraries and save the script below as `run_hemmingway.py` in your current directory. The [Transformers 5.20.2 Qwen3.5 documentation](https://huggingface.co/docs/transformers/v5.20.2/en/model_doc/qwen3_5) covers the model architecture.

```sh
python3 -m venv .venv-hemmingway-transformers
. .venv-hemmingway-transformers/bin/activate
python -m pip install --upgrade pip
# Now run the GPU-enabled torch install command selected at https://pytorch.org/get-started/locally/
python -m pip install 'transformers==5.20.2' 'accelerate==1.15.0'
python -m pip show torch transformers accelerate
```

```python
from transformers import AutoModelForCausalLM, AutoTokenizer
model_id = "HemmingwayAI/Hemmingway-1"
revision = "1a5f363a3dd2d1cc456c28b8abbb403b9555efaf"
tokenizer = AutoTokenizer.from_pretrained(model_id, revision=revision)
model = AutoModelForCausalLM.from_pretrained(
    model_id, revision=revision, device_map="auto", dtype="auto"
)
messages = [{"role": "user", "content": "Write one brief, neutral greeting."}]
inputs = tokenizer.apply_chat_template(
    messages, add_generation_prompt=True, return_dict=True, return_tensors="pt"
).to(model.device)
output = model.generate(**inputs, max_new_tokens=512)
reply = tokenizer.decode(
    output[0][inputs["input_ids"].shape[-1]:], skip_special_tokens=True
)
assert reply.strip(), "No newly generated text was decoded"
print(reply)
```

Save that complete Python block as `run_hemmingway.py` in the current directory, then run it from the activated Transformers environment:

```sh
python run_hemmingway.py
```

Here `dtype="auto"` selects the checkpoint's configured BF16 precision; it does not choose a precision by testing your GPU. If your backend cannot support it, stop and use a documented compatible path rather than guessing a dtype override. The explicit `return_dict=True` creates a batch with named inputs, including the attention mask. Moving that batch to `model.device` and calling `model.generate(**inputs)` preserves those inputs; slicing after `inputs["input_ids"].shape[-1]` decodes only new tokens. A tensor-only `generate` call would lose that contract. The script passes this check only after loading, generation and nonempty newly decoded text. `device_map="auto"` may place layers in ordinary RAM, and a completed run says nothing about speed. If loading fails, record the full exception and package versions. If no new text is decoded, inspect the generated token count and settings. The publisher notes that reasoning can consume part of the `max_new_tokens` budget before a final message appears.

## 3. Record the result you actually obtained

For either route, note your GPU model and count, available memory, driver, Linux distribution, Python and PyTorch versions, runtime version, context setting, pinned checkpoint SHA, exact request, and returned text or error. A nonempty response establishes that your local path generated text. It does not establish the publisher's quality claims or factual reliability; read and check any message before using it. If the output consists only of reasoning, or lacks a usable final greeting, record the check as incomplete and inspect a documented generation limit instead of calling it a finished writing response. Stop at an unsupported architecture, driver, access, license or hardware constraint rather than bypassing a trust check or switching checkpoints silently.

For broader hardware-selection context, see BIG CHANGE's [128GB local-model buying guide](https://bigchange.ai/blog/run-local-models-128gb-memory-cost). That article concerns machine choices; the instructions here concern one pinned writing checkpoint and a first local response.
