# Write a sourced blog draft with live web search and human review

> Use a complete Node.js project to search the live web, draft a cited blog post for a chosen audience, then open the sources and resolve its claims before use.

![Conceptual charcoal illustration of a blog draft on a portrait monitor beside a separate source page on a smaller screen, with orange inline link marks.](https://bigchange.ai/api/media/file/searched-blog-source-review-hero-v2.png)
AI-generated conceptual illustration by BIG CHANGE; no actual OpenAI call, source, draft, citation verification or successful account result is depicted.

A writer can start with a topic, a defined audience and an angle, then ask an AI model to search and produce a draft. The useful result is more than fluent prose: it is a complete post whose source links render beside the claims they supposedly support, plus a record of what the search actually did. This guide gives you a local Node.js program that makes that request through [OpenAI’s Responses web search](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/tools-web-search), checks the returned structure and saves the draft for a person to verify. The code was checked with offline fixtures; no live OpenAI account run or generated article is claimed here.

## The big change

- **What changed:** A blog-writing workflow can connect live search, a complete draft and visible source links in one reproducible local run. The saved draft text and selected search and citation evidence remain available alongside the readable draft.
- **Why it matters:** Writers can inspect the trail behind each material claim before approving copy. A clickable citation makes that review possible; it does not make the claim true.
- **What to watch:** The decision to publish still turns on the underlying pages, their dates and contrary evidence. The program holds an incomplete search or broken citation display so the writer sees that problem before using the draft.

## What you need

Use Node.js **20.19.0 or newer** and PowerShell **7.3 or newer on Windows** for the commands below, plus an OpenAI API project allowed to use the Responses API, `gpt-6-luna` and web search. The [model page](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/models/gpt-6-luna) documents the model and supported tool; actual access and rate limits depend on your project. You also need a topic you are permitted to send to the provider, a description of your readers and the practical question the post should answer. Keep the API key in the current shell's `OPENAI_API_KEY` environment variable. Do not put it in `input.json`, code or a shared output directory.

The six files below form one complete project. Save them in the same new directory under the exact filenames shown. The parser checks the rendered Markdown structure and links, rather than relying on heading text or URL-looking characters alone.

## Run the draft workflow

### 1. Check the tools and install

Save all six files in one new directory. Open PowerShell 7.3 or newer there, check the reported versions against the prerequisites, then install and run the offline checks. Installation needs npm registry access; the test makes no model request.

```powershell
node --version
$PSVersionTable.PSVersion
npm ci --ignore-scripts
npm test
```

### 2. Set the topic, readers and angle

Copy the supplied example, open it in Notepad and replace all three values with a permitted topic, a specific audience and the practical question the post should answer. Save the file.

```powershell
Copy-Item .\input.example.json .\input.json
notepad .\input.json
```

### 3. Enter the key and request a draft

Check your account’s access, limits, [current API prices](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/pricing) and spending ceiling first. In the same PowerShell window, enter the key at a masked prompt and run the project. [PowerShell’s `Read-Host` reference](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/module/microsoft.powershell.utility/read-host?view=powershell-7.6) confirms that `-MaskInput` hides typed characters and returns a string. The key remains in this process environment, accessible to the child Node process; masking does not encrypt it. Use a fresh output name under an existing parent directory each time.

```powershell
$env:OPENAI_API_KEY = Read-Host -Prompt 'OpenAI API key' -MaskInput
node .\generate.mjs .\input.json .\first-run
```

### 4. Render and open the result

If the request completes and passes validation, render its Markdown locally, then open the HTML file. Check that the title, Introduction, Body and Conclusion appear and that each inline citation is visibly clickable. Keep `draft-raw.md`, `evidence.json` and `review.md` with the draft. This local display is not publication.

```powershell
node -e "const fs=require('node:fs'); const MarkdownIt=require('markdown-it'); const md=new MarkdownIt('commonmark',{html:false}); fs.writeFileSync('first-run/draft.html',md.render(fs.readFileSync('first-run/draft.md','utf8')))"
Invoke-Item .\first-run\draft.html
```

### 5. Open sources and record the human decision

Open each supporting page yourself. Compare the linked passage with the precise claim, check dates, primary records and contrary evidence, and rewrite or remove unsupported claims. Record those decisions in the pending checklist before the post is used.

```powershell
notepad .\first-run\review.md
```

The script requires an actual completed search action. Configuration or a model assertion that it searched would not prove the action happened. Search query strings are recorded when returned, but the API need not expose them. The [Responses creation reference](https://developers.openai.com/api/reference/resources/responses/methods/create) documents the request shape; the [web search guide](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/tools-web-search) documents the search output and URL citations.

The program retains the exact model text and hashes each output text block. It binds citation offsets to the block that supplied them, inserts a visible Markdown link beside the cited line, and parses the result as CommonMark. It requires one real H1, named H2 sections with prose and a rendered clickable link for each citation. It holds ambiguous offsets, missing or pending search status, missing sections, or citation text that would disappear into code, raw HTML, escapes or other unsupported Markdown contexts. These strict checks can reject useful prose. Inspect the error and account usage before deciding on a deliberate rerun; do not delete checks simply to force a pass.

One call can use more than one search and incur both model-token and search-tool charges. The code has no automatic retry. An HTTP error, timeout or output-write failure can leave usage uncertain; inspect the account usage and target path, including partial files, before choosing a new output name. The script rejects an already existing output path before the request and uses exclusive directory creation after it, but a collision after the request can still cost money. `store:false` disables ordinary response application-state storage; [OpenAI’s data-control guide](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/your-data) describes separate abuse-monitoring logs, normally retained up to 30 days subject to account controls and exceptions. Check the current terms for sensitive material.

The generated links are leads for review, not proof. The program neither downloads entire source pages nor validates that their content supports the sentences. Check quotations, copied phrasing and any media rights before sharing. [OpenAI’s Services Agreement](https://openai.com/policies/services-agreement/) describes the parties’ input and output responsibilities; it does not grant permission to reproduce other publishers’ pages. This guide is a documented workflow with offline parser checks, not a claim of a successful paid run or a fact-checked sample article.

## Copy the complete project files

Keep each code block in its named file, including the full lockfile. The test file exercises offline fixtures; passing it shows the local validation logic handles those cases, not that your project is entitled to the model or that a generated claim is accurate.

## Conclusion

The files give a writer a repeatable path from an approved topic to a searched, cited draft with a visible human approval boundary. A successful local validation means the response contains the required sections, a completed search receipt and clickable citation links. Publishable accuracy comes only after a person opens the sources and resolves the claims. Keep that review record with `draft-raw.md`, `evidence.json` and the final copy.
