# Research one topic, approve a linked digest and post it to one Slack channel

> Use a complete Python 3.12 recipe to search one public topic, check a cited digest, authorize one Slack channel post and inspect its exact bot readback or uncertain-delivery journal.

![Conceptual charcoal illustration of one reviewer holding a four-point digest in front of an empty communal noticeboard with an unused orange pin.](https://bigchange.ai/api/media/file/slack-digest-noticeboard-v2.png)
AI-generated conceptual illustration by BIG CHANGE; no real Slack interface, authorized post, provider search or delivery readback is depicted.

A team digest is useful only when someone has checked its sources and chosen the right audience. This Python 3.12 recipe uses OpenAI's native web search to draft three to five linked bullets about one public question. A person compares the claims with the cited pages, then authorizes one bot post to a specified public Slack channel.

## The big change

- **What changed:** A public research question can lead to a shared briefing through one inspectable local workflow. [Native web search](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/tools-web-search) supplies linked bullets, a person binds approval to the exact draft, and a bot attempts one authorized channel post. The model's role ends before the sharing decision.
- **Why it matters:** An operator with the required access can prepare a compact, source-linked update for channel readers and retain a record of the approved text and intended destination. Source review and audience choice are visible in the same procedure; the offline tests cannot establish a live digest's accuracy.
- **What to watch:** The decision to share turns on the actual source pages, reuse rights and channel permission. If a send becomes uncertain, the operator must inspect the channel and author before another attempt; the journal cannot guarantee exactly-once delivery.

This is a documented build with five offline tests. We did not perform a live provider search or Slack send. [Our earlier guide](https://bigchange.ai/blog/openai-web-search-checked-linked-pdf-report-guide) takes research to a PDF; this one addresses the separate task of reviewed channel delivery.

## 1. Prepare the accounts and files

Install Python 3.12. On Windows, check the selected interpreter with `py -3.12 --version`. Save both complete code blocks below as `workflow.py` and `test_workflow.py` in one new directory. They use only Python's standard library. Run `py -3.12 -B -m unittest -v test_workflow.py` first. Its five offline tests cover accepted and held searches, citation safety, exact human approval, bot/channel checks, matching and mismatched readbacks, rate limits and uncertain sends. Fixtures cannot establish live access, claim accuracy or delivery.

Your [OpenAI API project](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/models/gpt-6-luna) needs `gpt-6-luna` and Responses `web_search` access. Check access, current rates and usage limits in your account before a paid run. Choose a specific public topic you may send to the provider. Search queries and results leave your machine. The request includes `store:false`, which does not establish zero retention under every account setting; check the [data controls](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/your-data).

An authorized Slack administrator can [create a blank app](https://docs.slack.dev/app-management/quickstart-app-settings/) in the intended workspace. In **OAuth & Permissions → Bot Token Scopes**, add `chat:write`, `channels:read` and `channels:history`. Select **Install to Workspace**, authorize the installation, and reinstall if scopes were added later. Take the Bot User OAuth Access Token from that page and invite the app to the intended public channel. Have the administrator identify the exact workspace ID (`T…`), channel ID (`C…`) and bot ID (`B…`); display names are insufficient. The script uses `auth.test`, `conversations.info` and `conversations.history` before posting. The administrator still needs to confirm actual grants and channel policy.

In a private PowerShell session, enter each credential at a masked prompt. These assignments give the Python child process access without putting literal credentials in typed command text:

```powershell
$openaiSecret = Read-Host 'OpenAI API key' -AsSecureString
$env:OPENAI_API_KEY = [System.Net.NetworkCredential]::new('', $openaiSecret).Password
$slackSecret = Read-Host 'Slack bot token' -AsSecureString
$env:SLACK_BOT_TOKEN = [System.Net.NetworkCredential]::new('', $slackSecret).Password
```

PowerShell's [session environment](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/module/microsoft.powershell.core/about/about_environment_variables?view=powershell-7.6) is inherited by Python. The variables contain ordinary strings in process memory while set. Do not print them or save them in the script, draft, screenshot or receipt. After the run, clear them with `Remove-Item Env:OPENAI_API_KEY, Env:SLACK_BOT_TOKEN` and close the session.

## 2. Prepare and approve a digest

Run a narrow, public research question with a new draft filename:

```powershell
py -3.12 workflow.py prepare "Public developments in the chosen topic during the past week" draft.json
```

`prepare` requires a completed Responses web-search action, one completed text message, three to five bullets, at least two cited HTTPS URLs and valid, nonoverlapping citation offsets. It renders source links in Slack's clickable format and holds unsafe control syntax. The draft records the provider's usage field when available; a missing field is unknown usage, not a free request. A failed or timed-out request might still incur charges. Inspect account usage before deciding to make another research call.

Open `draft.json` and every linked source. Compare names, dates, numbers, context and uncertainty with the page itself. Check quotation and reproduction rights before sharing. A model citation identifies a source to inspect; it does not validate the sentence. Keep a rejected draft and prepare a new one under a new filename when a correction is needed. Do not edit an already reviewed draft in place.

Approve the exact acceptable draft with:

```powershell
py -3.12 workflow.py approve draft.json review.json "Your reviewer name"
```

The command prints the exact message and source URLs. Type `APPROVE` only after comparing the claims and rights. Any other input writes a held review. An approval receipt binds the draft's SHA-256 and exact approved text; it records a person's decision, not an automated fact check.

## 3. Authorize one post and inspect the journal

An operator authorized for the named workspace and channel can run the optional send with fresh `delivery.json` and the administrator's exact IDs:

```powershell
py -3.12 workflow.py post draft.json review.json delivery.json C12345678 T12345678 B12345678
```

Before sending, the script checks the draft and approval match, validates bot/workspace identity, checks that the exact channel is public, and verifies bot history access. It displays the approved text and asks you to type the exact channel ID and bot ID. It writes an `attempting` journal before calling `chat.postMessage` once. `verified` means the history readback matched the returned timestamp, exact text and intended bot ID. Inspect the message visually in the destination channel too; API readback does not show who read it.

For `posted_unverified`, inspect the channel and author before considering any other action. A `rate_limited` journal records Slack's `Retry-After`; wait at least that long and check the channel before any deliberate new attempt. A timeout, connection break or HTTP 5xx leaves an unknown delivery outcome because the post might already exist. Reconcile channel, timestamp, text and bot identity before choosing whether a new attempt is justified. The script refuses to reuse a journal path and never retries automatically. Check current [Slack rate limits](https://docs.slack.dev/apis/web-api/rate-limits/) and workspace rules.

At the 26 October 2026 documentation check, standard short-context [GPT-6 Luna](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/models/gpt-6-luna) rates were $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens, plus [$10 per 1,000 web searches](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/pricing). Actual charges depend on calls and tokens. This script does not schedule itself.
