Shield AI says the U.S. Navy has executed a $150 million modification to its existing Other Transaction agreement for X-BAT, the company's planned autonomous aircraft capable of vertical takeoff and landing. In its [October 8 announcement](https://shield.ai/shield-ai-and-u-s-government-investment-in-x-bat-reaches-400-million/), Shield AI committed another $150 million of its own capital.

The company puts combined public and private commitments at $400 million. Flight testing is still scheduled for later in 2026; the announcement establishes a development funding action, with no completed X-BAT flight or operational deployment reported.

## The big change

- **What changed:** The Navy is increasing support for a reusable strike aircraft designed to operate without a fixed runway. Shield AI is matching the new funding, committing company money to the same development effort.
- **Why it matters:** A design that launches and returns vertically would give naval planners another way to base aircraft at sea. That proposed flexibility depends on proving the aircraft and its integration with ship operations.
- **What to watch:** Flight testing is the next announced milestone. The useful evidence will be actual launch and recovery performance, followed by results from ship integration work that show how the aircraft operates alongside existing aviation.

## How the $400 million is counted

The new $150 million government modification comes through the Defense Exportability Features program, according to Shield AI. Its matching $150 million commitment makes this latest action $300 million across the two parties.

That is separate from the earlier $50 million Navy action and Shield AI's matching $50 million commitment. The arithmetic is $200 million in government actions plus $200 million in announced company capital. The combined figure describes commitments; it does not establish that all the money has been spent.

A [Navy release dated August 13](https://www.dvidshub.net/news/572381/don-rco-diu-and-pae-aviation-invest-50m-scale-unmanned-maritime-strike-capabilities) confirms the earlier $50 million investment with Shield AI to advance Runway Independent Maritime Expeditionary Strike capabilities. It provides government confirmation of that earlier step, while the October modification is described in the company's release.

## The aircraft remains in development

Shield AI's [X-BAT product page](https://shield.ai/x-bat/) describes a jet intended to launch and recover from ships, remote islands and austere bases. The design uses Hivemind autonomy software as its AI pilot. The company advertises operation with GPS or communications unavailable and missions including air-to-air, surface attack and electronic warfare.

Its listed specifications include a 39-foot wingspan, range above 2,000 nautical miles and a ceiling above 50,000 feet. These are company specifications, not independently measured X-BAT flight results. The page lists first flight in 2026, mission capability in 2028 and production in 2029 as planned milestones.

[Golem's October 11 report](https://www.golem.de/news/shield-ai-drohne-navy-x-bat-startet-senkrecht-von-flugzeugen-aus-2610-213966.html) brought the program back into the news and describes planned flights and shipborne use. The funding event itself dates to October 8. Readers assessing the program can distinguish that financing progress from the flight and operational evidence still to come.
