AI-generated conceptual illustration of collective voice in tabletop-game work. AI protections are one of several goals the workers seek to negotiate; no actual organizing event or agreed contract is depicted.

Workers behind Dungeons & Dragons, D&D Beyond and Wizards of the Coast's tabletop Magic: The Gathering and Duel Masters teams announced on October 6, 2026 that they are organizing with United Wizards of the Coast-CWA. They asked management to voluntarily recognize their unions by October 13. AI protections are part of a wider set of workplace demands. [CWA's October 6 announcement](https://cwa-union.org/news/releases/dungeons-dragons-and-studio-x-teams-form-latest-wizards-coast-unions-cwa) describes a campaign for recognition and representation.

## The big change

- **What changed:** The organizing effort now extends beyond Magic: The Gathering Arena to the D&D and Studio X teams. Workers are seeking a collective route to negotiate workplace protections, including how AI affects their work.
- **Why it matters:** The D&D workers want their stated preference for human-made games secured through a union contract. That would put the issue into negotiated terms; the letter establishes a goal, without showing an agreed clause.
- **What to watch:** Recognition is the next decision the workers have asked management to make. Their October 13 deadline concerns recognition, and the joint announcement places bargaining afterward. Any eventual AI terms will need to be judged by their actual wording and scope.

## Two new organizing groups follow Arena's election

The [joint worker announcement](https://unitedwizardsofthecoast.com/news/dnd-studiox-join-uwotc-cwa) distinguishes the D&D team, including D&D Beyond, from Studio X, which includes the tabletop Magic and Duel Masters teams. Studio X is therefore distinct from the digital Magic: The Gathering Arena workforce that had already organized.

Arena workers won their union election on June 23, according to [CWA's July report](https://cwa-union.org/news/video-game-and-comic-book-workers-score-big-organizing-wins). CWA reported 83% voting in favor. [Northwest Labor Press](https://nwlaborpress.org/2026/07/union-magic-a-new-union-at-wizards-of-the-coast/) separately reported a 79-16 vote in a unit of 102 Arena workers. Those figures describe the earlier Arena election, not a vote by the newly organizing teams.

The October announcement says the new groups informed leadership of their intent to unionize and sought voluntary recognition. It does not announce an election victory for those groups or a strike. CWA says workers have also filed an election petition with the National Labor Relations Board. BIG CHANGE could not retrieve the assigned NLRB case page during reporting, so that filing statement is attributed to CWA rather than independently verified from the docket.

## The AI language differs between the letters

The [Studio X letter](https://unitedwizardsofthecoast.com/studiox-letter) seeks "Protection against the encroachment of AI." Its other requests cover compensation, job security, career paths and raises, healthcare, stable remote and hybrid practices, sustainable workloads, and ownership of work created outside the office. It also asks management for a labor neutrality agreement. The AI sentence does not specify tools, prohibited uses or proposed contract language.

The [D&D letter](https://unitedwizardsofthecoast.com/dnd-letter) gives a more specific account. Workers say Hasbro has increased pressure to adopt large language models and generative AI tools, while Wizards has resisted and kept AI out of their games. This is the workers' characterization of company behavior. They want to preserve that stance through a union contract.

For players, the letters explain workers' goals without establishing a new company AI policy. They do not establish a ban on every company use of AI or an existing negotiated protection. The D&D team describes a contract objective; Studio X states a broader concern. Both put AI beside employment conditions that workers want to negotiate.
