Amazon, Alphabet and Microsoft reported substantial equipment investment in the quarter ended September 2026.

## The big change

- Operating cash can fund equipment purchases while a business builds capacity. When spending exceeds that period’s operating cash, the difference must be covered by other resources or financing.
- Their company-wide figures do not isolate AI spending.
- The cash left after equipment purchases is a period measure. It does not establish a project’s eventual return or the company’s cash balance.

## A common quarter, different outcomes

[Amazon’s results](https://ir.aboutamazon.com/news-release/news-release-details/2026/Amazon-com-Announces-Third-Quarter-Results/default.aspx) show $42.422 billion of operating cash and $77.259 billion of equipment purchases. Its free-cash-flow formula subtracts purchases **net of** $1.381 billion in sale proceeds and incentives, yielding a $33.456 billion quarterly outflow.

[Alphabet](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1652044/000165204426000080/googexhibit991q32026.htm) reported $42.290 billion in operating cash and $51.355 billion of purchases, leaving negative quarterly free cash flow of $9.065 billion.

[Microsoft’s filing](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/789019/000119312526436133/msft-20260930.htm) shows $58 billion in operating cash and $39.367 billion of additions. Subtracting these lines gives $18.633 billion for its fiscal first quarter; this is BIG CHANGE’s calculation, not a company-reported free-cash-flow measure.

## Why the time window matters

Amazon reported a $42.357 billion free-cash-flow outflow for the twelve months through September. It said the increase in net equipment purchases primarily reflected AI investments.

Alphabet’s trailing twelve-month free cash flow was positive $19.747 billion despite its negative quarter. The quarter and twelve-month figures cover different periods.

BIG CHANGE previously covered [Alphabet’s cloud growth and quarterly cash figures](https://bigchange.ai/blog/alphabet-cloud-growth).

## What the figures can tell readers

Operating cash flow includes the effects of working capital, such as changes in receivables and payables. Equipment purchases fund assets that can serve a business for years, so their cash cost can precede the revenue associated with them. A period of heavy investment can therefore leave less operating cash available for other uses even when the underlying business generates substantial cash.

A cloud customer considering capacity, for example, cannot infer a delivery date from these company-wide cash figures. The figures do not establish how much any one data center costs, whether it will be used fully or whether its revenue will justify the investment. Those questions require project and customer evidence beyond these statements.

The selected measures also leave out other uses of cash, such as acquisitions and debt payments. Leases and equipment bought but not yet paid for can shift when investment appears as a cash purchase. Comparisons are therefore sensitive to both the reporting period and the measure used.

BIG CHANGE reviewed the company disclosures and performed the stated arithmetic; it did not independently audit their accounts or test the infrastructure.
