Australia's renewable energy agency has awarded up to A$31.1 million for local manufacturing and deployment of two kinds of solar construction robots. [ARENA's October 13 announcement](https://arena.gov.au/news/australian-made-solar-robots-move-towards-commercial-scale-with-32-3-million-in-arena-funding/) assigns up to A$17.8 million to Luminous Robotics for machines that place panels and up to A$13.3 million to Built Robotics Australia for machines that drive the steel piles beneath solar trackers.

Both systems have worked on Australian solar sites. The new awards fund a different stage: production facilities, support capacity and wider deployment. Their announced fleet sizes and cost reductions are targets, not results of the new projects.

## The big change

- **What changed:** ARENA is funding a Melbourne manufacturing facility for LUMI panel-placement robots and a Queensland assembly and operations hub for Built's autonomous piling systems.
- **Why it matters:** The robots address separate construction tasks. The projects will test whether earlier field deployments can become repeatable equipment and workflows for Australian solar crews.
- **What to watch:** Luminous aims to manufacture and deploy about 100 LUMIs by 2029. Built plans 12 new piling robot sets by October 2028, alongside trials of automated pre-drilling and night operations. Those capabilities and production volumes still need to be demonstrated.

## Panels: a robot places them, workers secure them

LUMI uses a tracked chassis and robotic arm to lift solar modules and place them on tracker structures. [ARENA's description of the earlier pilot](https://arena.gov.au/news/lumi-robots-scaleup-solar-deployment-with-advanced-automation/) says workers complete the final securing step. Luminous's [2025 pilot record](https://arena.gov.au/projects/luminous-robotics-scale-for-a-solar-future-deployment/) named sites at Goorambat in Victoria and Culcairn in New South Wales. ARENA's [public knowledge-share summary](https://arena.gov.au/knowledge-bank/luminous-knowledge-share-public-report/) documents a LUMI Series 4 pilot at Goorambat East and says process flow remained a major driver of installation rate. That is evidence of field use, not evidence that the newly funded Melbourne line or 100-robot fleet exists.

The [new Luminous project record](https://arena.gov.au/projects/scaling-sovereign-production-of-the-lumi-fleet/) runs to May 2030. It calls for a Melbourne facility and field deployments to establish manufacturing, service and crew-integration capacity. ARENA expects the facility to support manufacture and deployment of around 100 robots by 2029. The project record says lessons about productivity and safety will be shared as fleets work on active sites; it does not report a measured result from that future scale-up.

## Foundations: a trial with conditions

Built's Exosystem kits turn standard excavators into autonomous piling machines. Its [new project record](https://arena.gov.au/projects/built-robotics-solar-piling-robot-manufacturing-scale-up/) calls for assembly in South East Queensland, final integration and testing at the existing Pinkenba workshop, and 12 new robot sets. A proposed attachment would automate pre-drilling in difficult ground. Built also plans to develop perception systems and an Australian network operations centre for remotely monitored night work. The record describes these as development and pilot work, subject to site conditions and approvals.

An earlier [Fortescue trial report](https://arena.gov.au/assets/2026/03/Fortescue-Pilbara-Solar-Innovation-Hub-Built-Robotics-Trial-Report.pdf) offers a useful limit on claims about the piling system. At Cloudbreak in Western Australia, hard ground prevented direct driving, so every test hole needed pre-drilling and cement-stabilised fill. Fortescue reported about 67% less staffing per piling rig than conventional methods under the trial arrangement, with one operator able to supervise up to three rigs. It also recorded curing and cracking problems that required rework, and said the machines' larger footprint affects site layout. The trial did not establish a direct cost comparison; sustained performance above 40°C and direct driving in that Pilbara ground remain untested in the report.

For developers and EPC contractors, the immediate change is funding for local production and deployment capacity at two construction stages. The field records show machines performing those tasks under particular conditions. The proposed factories, fleet sizes, automated pre-drilling and night shifts will need their own operating evidence. BIG CHANGE has not tested either system.
