BMW's [October 27 release](https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/global/article/detail/T0462233EN/one-million-vehicles-moved-without-drivers%3A-bmw-group-successfully-scales-automated-driving-in-production?showMedia=photo) reports one million driverless vehicle movements inside its factories.
## The big change
- **What changed:** BMW reports four-site use after a 2022 pilot.
- **Why it matters:** Operators can move differently equipped cars using factory sensors and controls.
- **What to watch:** Spartanburg is planned for 2027 as a fifth site.
## How a car moves without carrying the sensing system
BMW's [2022 pilot description](https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/global/article/detail/T0402335EN?language=en) gives the clearest account of the control path. Fixed sensors locate vehicles and detect obstacles in the plant. Planning software calculates a route and sends driving commands to the car over mobile communications. The pilot paired Seoul Robotics' LiDAR-based detection software with Embotech's planning software, which handled steering, braking, acceleration and parking. These are functions of an instrumented site and its communications link, so the result should not be read as a road-autonomy capability built into every car that uses it.
In July 2022, BMW planned a transfer from assembly toward logistics. It said control could begin after first ignition. The car needed to move under command, while location and obstacle information came from the site. BMW did not specify loss-of-link recovery, speed or operator intervention. Those gaps matter when evaluating a comparable installation.
By [November 2024](https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/global/article/detail/T0446493EN/high-tech-in-production%3A-bmw-group-enables-automated-driving-for-new-vehicles?language=en), BMW reported that the Dingolfing pilot had passed CE certification and was entering series operation. It described a route longer than a kilometre between assembly halls, a short test course and finishing, using an external environment model and movement planner. Leipzig was also being enabled for series operation. These records do not measure safety or savings.
That 2024 account separates a deployment boundary from a rollout ambition. It described Dingolfing in operation, Leipzig being enabled and other plants still planned. It also mentioned possible expansion to testing and outdoor distribution areas. The October report establishes that two more named sites are now in use. The 2024 expansion proposal did not establish that every proposed route or area would be implemented. The CE statement is BMW's account of certification, without a certificate or assessment scope in the material reviewed here.
## What the new milestone counts
BMW names Dingolfing, Leipzig, Regensburg and Oxford, reporting more than 53,000 Oxford movements over the past year. At Oxford, AFW positions cars beside a lifting device and connects with plant controls.
BMW's release provides no site ledger or definition of whether repeated trips by one car count separately. The figure does not establish one million distinct cars.
BMW claims efficiency gains without comparative time, cost or incident figures. AI supports development, simulation and operation, it says.
