This resumable AI agent job processes one to three short source files approved by their owner. If the process stops, its saved state distinguishes completed items from provider calls whose outcome remains unknown. It saves the work between items, holds uncertain calls for inspection, and ends with a person checking the output against the original sources.

The big change

  • What changed: The reference job keeps its progress in a local checkpoint and records each possible model call in a separate operation journal. An interrupted run can identify the item and the call that need attention.
  • Why it matters: A developer with a permissioned document task can resume the same job without passing earlier model prose into later prompts or automatically repeating a call whose outcome is unknown. Exact source quotes get a structural check before a reviewer sees the proposals.
  • What to watch: The final decision still depends on a human comparing each claim with its source and checking actual provider usage. Local SQLite and mock tests establish this example's control flow; they do not establish production durability, model accuracy or remote exactly-once behavior.

1. Set the job boundary

You need Python 3.12, permission to use the source documents, and a local directory you can restrict and retain under your own policy. The complete files at the end of this article are durable_job.py, requirements.txt, manifest.structural.json, fixtures/alpha.txt, fixtures/beta.txt and test_durable_job.py. Save each block under that exact relative name. The fixture names and contents describe a synthetic structure, not a real case. The pinned versions are LangGraph 1.2.16, its SQLite checkpointer 3.1.2 and the OpenAI Python SDK 3.37.0. BIG CHANGE's ten local structural tests ran with those versions on Python 3.12; every model and provider interaction in the tests was fake or mocked.

Save files as UTF-8 without a byte-order mark, with LF line endings and exactly one final newline. The structural manifest contains hashes of those exact fixture bytes. Create the fixtures directory for its two files. Start in a private PowerShell directory containing those files.

First normalize the six copied files and verify the fixture hashes below. This removes a possible byte-order mark and normalizes line endings and the final newline. Do this only before starting a job; changing files after sealing them deliberately prevents resume.

PowerShell
$ErrorActionPreference = 'Stop'
$referenceFiles = @('durable_job.py', 'requirements.txt', 'manifest.structural.json', 'fixtures/alpha.txt', 'fixtures/beta.txt', 'test_durable_job.py')
$referenceEncoding = [System.Text.UTF8Encoding]::new($false)
foreach ($referenceFile in $referenceFiles) {
    $referencePath = (Resolve-Path -LiteralPath $referenceFile).Path
    $referenceText = [System.IO.File]::ReadAllText($referencePath).Replace("`r`n", "`n").TrimEnd([char[]]"`r`n") + "`n"
    [System.IO.File]::WriteAllText($referencePath, $referenceText, $referenceEncoding)
}
$fixtureManifest = Get-Content -LiteralPath .\manifest.structural.json -Raw | ConvertFrom-Json
foreach ($fixtureItem in $fixtureManifest.items) {
    $fixtureHash = (Get-FileHash -LiteralPath $fixtureItem.path -Algorithm SHA256).Hash.ToLowerInvariant()
    if ($fixtureHash -ne $fixtureItem.sha256) { throw "Fixture hash mismatch: $($fixtureItem.id)" }
}
'Fixture hashes match'

Now install the pinned packages and run the checks:

PowerShell
py -3.12 -m venv .venv
.\.venv\Scripts\python.exe -m pip install -r requirements.txt
.\.venv\Scripts\python.exe -m unittest -v test_durable_job.py

The expected local result is ten passing tests. These checks exercise the graph, file sealing, a bounded prompt, a crash before and after a fake journal completion, structural citation rejection, an inspected-response route and a human decision. They do not call a real model or prove that a citation supports a claim. If an install or test fails, keep the input and state files, read the specific failure, and repair the local environment before starting a real job. Do not infer a provider result from a local failure.

The main program exposes start, status, resume, reconcile, inspect and decide. The LangGraph persistence guide distinguishes checkpointed thread state from other stored application data. Its interrupt guide explains why the same thread_id must be used on resume and why effects near an interrupt require care. Here the code writes graph checkpoints through SqliteSaver and writes possible provider effects in effects.sqlite. The journal is part of this reference program. LangGraph does not supply its provider-reconciliation policy.

2. Prove the structure without a paid call

The supplied structural manifest uses mode: "fake". Run it once in a fresh private state directory:

PowerShell
.\.venv\Scripts\python.exe durable_job.py start --manifest .\manifest.structural.json --state-dir .\private-structural-state
.\.venv\Scripts\python.exe durable_job.py status --state-dir .\private-structural-state
.\.venv\Scripts\python.exe durable_job.py inspect --state-dir .\private-structural-state

start should return an interrupt containing the sealed manifest and result hashes. status lists operation keys and states. inspect reads the saved summaries and citations without running the graph or model. Compare its resultsSha256 with the interrupt before making a decision. The fixture's fake text offers no evidence of model quality. You can record a fixture-only terminal decision with the command below; use a new state directory for each new job.

PowerShell
.\.venv\Scripts\python.exe durable_job.py decide --state-dir .\private-structural-state --decision hold --reviewer 'fixture reviewer' --reason 'Structural demonstration only'

The graph prepares one item, calls the selected adapter, checks the returned JSON and advances to the next item. Each item gets the fixed system instruction and its own approved source, plus at most 600 characters of earlier item IDs, source hashes and structural status. Earlier model prose is not passed forward. Keep the original source files for final review. The exact manifest bytes, each source's raw bytes, the executable's SHA-256 and a graph version label are checked on resume. A changed input or executable stops the old job. Restore the reviewed files or create a new approved job; this example has no migration command.

3. Replace the fixture with owner-approved inputs

Before a real run, choose one to three UTF-8 files, each at most 3,000 bytes, for a finite question you can judge from those files. Keep them under the manifest directory. Record actual approval outside the code and set approvedBy to the reviewer who granted it. That field records an assertion; it does not authenticate a person. Check your right to send those files to the model provider, the account's available model and quota, current provider terms, data retention and actual token prices. Set a separate money limit and monitor account usage; maxModelCalls of 1 to 6, maxAttemptsPerItem of 1 to 2 and 500 output tokens per call bound calls and output size, not dollars. The code does not enforce a monetary cap.

Make a private manifest.json using this shape. Replace every angle-bracket value, use a fresh job ID and calculate the hashes of your actual source bytes. Add a third item only if needed. The template has no actual approval or account model; do not run it with placeholder values.

JSON
{
  "schemaVersion": 1,
  "jobId": "<unique-approved-job-id>",
  "approved": true,
  "approvedBy": "<actual-owner-or-delegate>",
  "mode": "openai",
  "model": "<model-available-to-your-account>",
  "providerTransferApproved": true,
  "maxModelCalls": 2,
  "maxAttemptsPerItem": 1,
  "items": [
    {"id": "item-one", "path": "sources/one.txt", "sha256": "<64-character-raw-byte-sha256>"},
    {"id": "item-two", "path": "sources/two.txt", "sha256": "<64-character-raw-byte-sha256>"}
  ]
}

For example, after creating sources/one.txt and sources/two.txt, calculate their raw-byte digests in PowerShell and paste the resulting 64-character values into their corresponding entries:

PowerShell
(Get-FileHash .\sources\one.txt -Algorithm SHA256).Hash.ToLowerInvariant()
(Get-FileHash .\sources\two.txt -Algorithm SHA256).Hash.ToLowerInvariant()

Put OPENAI_API_KEY in the private process environment using your normal secret manager. The reference code creates an SDK client with a 30-second timeout and automatic retries disabled, then calls responses.create with the selected model, fixed instruction and current item input. The OpenAI Python SDK documents this request style, retry control and response request IDs. Do not put a key in the manifest, article or terminal history. Run only after the owner has approved the inputs, transfer, model and expected spend:

PowerShell
.\.venv\Scripts\python.exe durable_job.py start --manifest .\manifest.json --state-dir .\private-real-state

The model is asked for JSON with itemId, summary and one to three {quote, claim} entries. The validator checks the shape, lengths, identity and whether each quote appears verbatim in that item's source. This catches some malformed or invented citations. It cannot decide whether the quotation supports the claim, whether the summary is complete, or whether the model followed every instruction. The model has no browser, mail, publishing or write tools in this reference program.

4. Resolve an interrupted call from the journal

If a process stops before the journal records a completed response, resume reports UNCERTAIN_CALL with the exact operation key. The row was committed before the possible provider request. A pending row therefore means the request's effect is unknown, even if the local process printed an error. Read status, then inspect the actual provider record and usage for that operation. The adapter requests store=False; do not assume the provider can retrieve a lost response. Completing the row requires an actual retained response. Otherwise keep the job stopped or make the explicit abandonment decision below. Never repeat a pending call just because the process stopped.

PowerShell
.\.venv\Scripts\python.exe durable_job.py status --state-dir .\private-real-state
.\.venv\Scripts\python.exe durable_job.py resume --state-dir .\private-real-state

If the provider record contains an actual response, save the inspected output privately as JSON with outputText and responseId (and requestId if available). These are values from the readback, not placeholders to fabricate. Complete only the matching pending operation:

JSON
{
  "outputText": "<exact provider output text>",
  "responseId": "<actual provider response ID>",
  "requestId": "<actual request ID if available>"
}
PowerShell
.\.venv\Scripts\python.exe durable_job.py reconcile --state-dir .\private-real-state --operation-key '<exact pending key>' --action complete --response-file .\private-inspected-response.json --reviewer '<actual reviewer>' --reason '<specific provider readback and source check>'
.\.venv\Scripts\python.exe durable_job.py resume --state-dir .\private-real-state

If the effect remains unknown, the owner can explicitly abandon that attempt with a reason and then resume within the remaining attempt and job caps:

PowerShell
.\.venv\Scripts\python.exe durable_job.py reconcile --state-dir .\private-real-state --operation-key '<exact pending key>' --action abandon --reviewer '<actual reviewer>' --reason '<why a possible charge or effect is accepted>'
.\.venv\Scripts\python.exe durable_job.py resume --state-dir .\private-real-state

Abandoning does not undo or prove the absence of a provider call or charge. If the journal already has a completed response after an interruption, resume reuses that saved text. The reconcile command stores the response file's hash and a local review assertion; the program cannot authenticate the provider record itself. Preserve the journal and investigate a conflict before deciding what to do next.

5. Inspect the work and record a human decision

When the final interrupt appears, run inspect in a private terminal. It prints all saved proposals and citations, so treat the output as sensitive. Confirm the result hash matches the interrupt. Open each original source whose hash the result names, then compare every summary sentence and citation claim with the relevant passage. A present quote is only a string match. Review failed items, pending or abandoned calls and actual provider usage. Keep the decision in the same thread:

PowerShell
.\.venv\Scripts\python.exe durable_job.py inspect --state-dir .\private-real-state
.\.venv\Scripts\python.exe durable_job.py decide --state-dir .\private-real-state --decision hold --reviewer '<actual reviewer>' --reason '<specific evidence or output gap>'

Choose accept only after every item passes the structural check and the person judges the claims supported; choose reject for an unacceptable result. A failed item cannot be accepted. A hold or reject is terminal in this example, and a second decision is refused. To revise inputs or obtain new output, create a new approved job and keep the old receipt. The final record binds the job, manifest, executable version/hash, result hash, item statuses, decision and time. It records the reviewer's judgment; the local reviewer field does not authenticate that person or independently verify the claims.

This is a local demonstration with bounded inputs. The LangGraph graph-design guide describes separating steps and synchronous checkpoint writes; its SQLite checkpointer is positioned for local development. A production operator would need a suitable backed store, access control, backups, retention, monitoring and a graph-upgrade plan. BIG CHANGE did not measure power loss, disk corruption, provider-side effects or semantic quality. Checkpoints and output may contain source text: restrict access and apply the owner's retention policy. Run one CLI process per state directory; the program uses an operating-system lock to refuse competing invocations. For a narrower related task, BIG CHANGE's resumable HTML fetching guide covers bounded parallel retrieval; this guide controls a whole source-based model job and its final acceptance.

Complete reference files

The blocks below are the complete files needed for this example. Preserve their bytes when reproducing the reviewed packet: changing durable_job.py after a job starts will deliberately stop resume. The structural fixture is for local checks only. Replace it with an approved real manifest and actual source files before any paid run.
