If you own a PowerPoint deck and are allowed to use its source workbook with Claude, you can ask Claude to update one chart from cells in an open Excel file. [Anthropic documents this Excel-to-PowerPoint workflow](https://claude.com/docs/office-agents/work-across-apps), while its [PowerPoint guide](https://claude.com/docs/office-agents/powerpoint) describes native charts that remain editable. The useful result is a saved slide whose numbers and labels you have checked against the workbook. This is a documentation-based guide; BIG CHANGE did not run the add-ins or test a chart update.

## The big change

- **What changed:** Claude's Microsoft 365 add-ins can coordinate a task across an open workbook and an open presentation, including an Excel-to-PowerPoint chart update.
- **Why it matters:** The presentation owner can specify the source cells and target chart in one conversation, then inspect an editable PowerPoint object.
- **What to watch:** The manuals do not establish that the chart stays linked to Excel or refreshes later. Treat the chart as a result to verify each time the source changes.

## Check access and prepare the files

You need a paid Claude Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise plan and direct Claude account sign-in. Cross-app work is not supported through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI, Azure AI Foundry or an LLM gateway. Anthropic's [cross-app setup](https://claude.com/docs/office-agents/work-across-apps) calls for installing **all four** Claude for Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Outlook add-ins from Microsoft AppSource and activating each at least once. In the add-in settings, turn on **Let Claude work across files** in each app you need on the device you are using. It defaults on for Pro and Max and off for Team and Enterprise. A Team or Enterprise owner can also control **Let Claude work across apps** in organization settings. Check for connected-app indicators before you rely on context from the other file.

Use supported versions: [Excel](https://claude.com/docs/office-agents/excel) on the web, Windows Microsoft 365 build 16.0.13127.20296 or later, or Mac version 16.46 with build 21011600 or later; [PowerPoint](https://claude.com/docs/office-agents/powerpoint) on the web, the same minimum Windows build, or Mac version 16.46 or later. The manuals exclude 2016 and 2019 perpetual or volume editions, iPad, Android and older Microsoft 365 builds below the required SharedRuntime level.

Open only a workbook and deck you are permitted to use with this service. Save a separate copy of the deck before editing. In Excel, identify the approved sheet and exact cell range, including header cells that define categories and series. Note the reporting period, units, and any rounding. In PowerPoint, identify the slide and the single chart to change. Check what the chart already shows so you can spot unintended changes.

## Update one chart

1. Open the source workbook in Excel and the target deck in PowerPoint, with their Claude add-ins active. Keep both files open. Anthropic says Claude works on currently open files; it cannot open, close or switch files for you. **Check:** both files and the connected-app indicators are visible.
2. In the PowerPoint add-in, describe the exact source and target. For example, adapt this request to your real files and cells:

```prompt
In the open workbook, use only the approved cells on [sheet and range], including the category and series headers. Update only the editable native chart on [slide and chart description] in this open deck. Preserve the existing slide layout. Tell me which source range, categories, series, period and units you used. Flag any missing or ambiguous value or label before making a change; do not fill one in.
```

This is a suggested request, not a tested command. Review any proposed action before allowing an edit. **Expected result:** Claude updates the named chart or reports why it cannot do so. The manuals document the route, not a guaranteed result for a particular workbook.

3. Inspect the chart in PowerPoint. Select it and confirm that PowerPoint exposes it as a chart you can edit, rather than a flat picture. Compare **every plotted value** with the approved Excel cells, including any visible rounding. Check category labels, series names and order, reporting period, units, axis labels and scale. Inspect the legend, title, colors, placement and surrounding slide layout. **Result:** either every element matches the source and intended presentation, or you have a specific discrepancy to repair.
4. Save the correct deck, reopen or reread the saved slide, and repeat the key data and editability checks before sharing it. If a value or label is wrong, correct that chart from the workbook or restore the deck copy and try a narrower request. Run the full comparison again after any correction. Do not share an unresolved mismatch as an accurate source chart.

## If the handoff or edit fails

If Claude cannot see a file, confirm that it is open, its add-in is activated, **Let Claude work across files** is enabled on this device, and your organization allows cross-app work. On Mac, find the add-in under Tools, Add-ins; on Windows, use Home, Add-ins. If the edit has not appeared, wait for Claude's current action to finish, then ask it to reread the open file. If the target or source is ambiguous, name the exact sheet, range, slide and chart again. The [cross-app troubleshooting guide](https://claude.com/docs/office-agents/work-across-apps) documents these checks.

Paid-plan usage limits apply; the cited manuals give no separate fixed price or completion time for this chart task. They also do not specify whether the result is linked to Excel, embeds Excel data, or refreshes automatically. Do not infer those behaviors from an editable chart. Anthropic cautions against final client deliverables without human review and against using highly sensitive or regulated data without appropriate controls. External workbooks and decks can contain hidden instructions intended to redirect the add-in, so use trusted files, scrutinize confirmations and inspect final changes.

Anthropic says add-in inputs and outputs are deleted from its backend within 30 days, subject to stated exceptions; the add-ins do not inherit an organization's custom retention settings. Activity is absent from Enterprise audit logs and data exports. For Enterprise organizations with the Compliance API enabled, add-in sessions are included there in public beta. Check your organization's policy before opening the files in Claude.

If your output is a document instead of a chart, our [Excel-to-Word memo guide](https://bigchange.ai/blog/claude-excel-word-memo-figure-check) covers the related figure-checking task.
