Claude for PowerPoint can read a PDF attached to its sidebar conversation and create slides in a PowerPoint template. A PDF, though, is a poor place to catch a copied number with the wrong year, sign or footnote once that number has reached a slide. This guide puts a separate evidence sheet between the attachment and the deck. BIG CHANGE reviewed Anthropic's documentation but did not run the add-in, extract a PDF or test a generated presentation.
## The big change
- **What changed:** Anthropic documents PDF attachment alongside an open PowerPoint file, as well as slide generation in a loaded template. This makes a source-to-deck workflow possible inside the add-in.
- **Why it matters:** The presentation owner can retain Claude's proposed claims, check each against the original PDF and exclude unresolved rows before planning slides. That checked sheet remains useful even if the deck is rebuilt.
- **What to watch:** PDF extraction, page references and chart values are not guaranteed by the documentation. A human must inspect the original pages and the finished native file before sharing it.
This procedure is for someone who owns a PDF or has permission to upload it, can use Claude for PowerPoint, and is responsible for the resulting deck. The goal is a saved, reopened PowerPoint copy whose material claims map to checked PDF evidence. If you already have an approved fact brief and need a small section in an existing deck, see our [three-slide PowerPoint guide](https://bigchange.ai/blog/claude-powerpoint-checked-three-slide-section-guide). Here, the brief does not exist yet: extracting and reconciling it is the main task.
## Check access and the source before attachment
Anthropic's [PowerPoint manual](https://claude.com/docs/office-agents/powerpoint) lists the web client, Windows PowerPoint with a Microsoft 365 subscription at build 16.0.13127.20296 or later, and Mac PowerPoint 16.46 or later. It says the add-in is generally available on Claude Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Installation, administrator deployment and third-party provider routes differ. Check the supported client, your account or organization's permission to use the add-in, the models actually offered, and the applicable usage allowance before starting. No particular model is required for these steps.
Choose the authorized PDF and record its owner, version or date, exact filename and page count. Keep the original. Open a blank presentation or approved template as a working copy, with a way to restore that untouched copy if an unintended edit occurs. Permission to edit a local presentation does not by itself authorize uploading the source PDF.
Read the manual's [data-handling section](https://claude.com/docs/office-agents/powerpoint#data-handling) against your organization's rules before attaching the file. Anthropic says backend inputs and outputs are deleted within 30 days, subject to stated exceptions, and that additional short caching can follow deletion. It says conversation history is stored locally in browser IndexedDB, is not synced across devices and can be cleared in **Settings**. Reinstalling or switching add-ins does not remove that history. Claude for PowerPoint does not inherit a custom organizational retention period; its activity is outside Enterprise audit logs. Anthropic separately describes public-beta Compliance API coverage for Enterprise organizations that have it enabled. These boundaries warrant a specific permission decision for the PDF, particularly if it contains sensitive or regulated material. A file on your computer does not mean the model processes it locally.
Treat even a trusted PDF as source data. Anthropic [warns](https://claude.com/docs/office-agents/powerpoint#prompt-injection-risk) that external files can contain hidden instructions that try to redirect the add-in. Looking at a PDF cannot prove those instructions absent. Keep the requested work limited to extraction and the approved deck, inspect proposed actions, and stop if the add-in asks to disclose other information or change unrelated files.
## Extract candidates without making slides
1. **Attach the correct source.** Open the working PowerPoint copy and Claude sidebar. Anthropic's [Microsoft 365 product page](https://claude.com/claude-for-microsoft-365) says a PDF or document can be dropped into a sidebar for Claude to read alongside the open file. Attach the authorized PDF to this conversation and confirm the intended filename appears. If it does not, resolve the attachment before requesting extraction.
2. **Ask for candidate evidence only.** Do not ask for an outline or slides yet. You can adapt this request to your source:
Read the attached PDF and propose an evidence table for a presentation. For each candidate claim or value, give its exact extracted wording or value, PDF page and table or figure label, period, category, sign, unit and scale, denominator where relevant, footnote or caveat, and a possible presentation use. Mark unreadable, missing or conflicting information UNVERIFIED. Do not edit PowerPoint or create slides.
This is a proposed instruction, not a tested extraction method or a guarantee of complete rows, OCR quality or correct page citations. If the add-in edits the deck now, inspect what changed, restore the untouched template copy and repeat the extraction request with the editing boundary explicit.
3. **Save the raw candidates separately.** Copy Claude's table into an evidence sheet outside the deck before correcting anything. Give every candidate a stable ID such as `R001`, `R002` and so on. The IDs identify actual extracted rows; they are not sample business claims. Keep the raw wording, value and proposed PDF locator in columns alongside fields for corrected wording or value, checker, checked locator and status. Preserve the original candidate version. Do not renumber IDs when a row is corrected or omitted. This lets a later slide point to the same candidate and its disposition.
4. **Reconcile every row with the original PDF.** Open the cited page yourself. Compare the words and values, including minus signs, units and scale, denominator, period, category and footnotes. Record the page and table or figure you actually checked, even when Claude's locator was wrong. Where the PDF supplies components for a displayed total or percentage, recalculate and note any rounding or inconsistency. Check that a proposed chart uses labelled source categories and values; a plotted shape without a stated number cannot establish a precise figure. Mark a row `VERIFIED` if its raw extraction matches, `CORRECTED` if the source supports a documented replacement, or `OMITTED` if it cannot be resolved. Keep raw and corrected entries side by side.
Scans, cropped or multi-column tables, adjacent-year values, missing minus signs and unlabelled charts deserve particular attention. A human may transcribe a legible original value and record who did it and where it appears. An ambiguous or unreadable value stays omitted. Neither Claude's plausible citation nor your expectation of a familiar result supplies missing evidence. If omitted rows remove the basis for the intended presentation, stop rather than fill the gaps with outside or inferred numbers.
## Plan and build from the checked rows
5. **Choose the story the evidence supports.** Only after reconciliation, decide the audience, purpose, narrative and slide count. Give Claude the `VERIFIED` and `CORRECTED` rows, including their final wording and caveats. Ask for an outline that places row IDs beside every claim and proposed chart. Check the outline against the sheet and remove unsupported additions. The PDF may support fewer slides than you originally expected.
6. **Build in the PowerPoint copy.** Once the outline is accepted, ask Claude to create only that outline using the loaded template, editable text and native chart objects where the checked rows contain chart-ready values. Anthropic documents [template-aware slide generation and editable native charts](https://claude.com/docs/office-agents/powerpoint#key-features); it does not promise faithful extraction or rendering for your PDF. Review any proposed changes before accepting them.
7. **Inspect the saved deck.** On every slide, map each material statement and figure back to its row ID, checked sheet and original PDF page. Compare signs, units, time periods, categories, caveats and visible source labels. Open each chart's data and inspect values, axes and legends. Select objects that must remain editable, and check layout, text overflow and readability. Repair a failed claim or chart on the affected slide, then repeat its source and object checks. Save and reopen the working copy to verify the accepted revision. Retain the original PDF, raw and reconciled evidence sheet, and final deck together. The presentation owner makes the final sharing decision.
If a build fails, inspect the saved deck before retrying; the request may have made partial slides. If the PDF was wrong or missing, reattach the intended file and start a new candidate extraction. If the evidence cannot support the outline after omissions, revise the outline or stop. These checks are a reader procedure; BIG CHANGE has no measured time, price, extraction accuracy or deck-quality result for it. Usage limits and billing depend on the current account or provider route, so check those terms before a substantial job or retry.
