Claude for Word can rewrite a selected passage as tracked changes, leaving the original deletion and proposed insertion visible for review. If you own a document and want to improve one section without silently replacing its text, make the selection first, switch on Claude's tracked changes mode, and decide what to keep in Word. This guide follows [Anthropic's Word manual](https://claude.com/docs/office-agents/word) and [Microsoft's tracked changes instructions](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/word/accept-or-reject-tracked-changes-in-word). BIG CHANGE did not run the add-in or test a document.

## The big change

- **What changed:** Claude for Word can limit a requested edit to selected text and submit it as Word revisions. The document owner can see the text removed and added before making either change final.
- **Why it matters:** A person polishing a report or memo can ask for clearer prose while retaining control over its facts, qualifications and voice. The review happens in the document where the passage will be used.
- **What to watch:** Selection limits the edit, not the add-in's access to the open document. Permissions, retention policy and a careful read of every proposed change still determine whether this workflow suits the material.

## Check the document and access first

Use a Word `.docx` that you are authorized to send to the add-in, and check your organization's rules for its contents. Anthropic lists support for Word on the web; Word on Windows with Microsoft 365 Version 2205, build 15202.10000 or later; and Word on Mac version 16.61, build 22040100 or later. The add-in does not support legacy `.doc` files, Word 2016 or 2019 perpetual editions, or Word on iPad or Android. Save a legacy file as `.docx` before starting. [Anthropic lists the supported builds and exclusions](https://claude.com/docs/office-agents/word).

For direct sign-in, the add-in is available to Claude Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise accounts. Install **Claude for Microsoft 365** from [Microsoft AppSource](https://marketplace.microsoft.com/en-us/product/office/WA200010725?tab=Overview), open it in Word and sign in. Your organization may instead deploy it through its Microsoft 365 administrator; Anthropic also documents administrator-configured third-party platform access without individual Claude accounts. Confirm your account, deployment permission and available model before editing. The add-in uses your existing account's usage limits, and organization model controls can restrict the models shown. Anthropic does not give this passage rewrite a separate fixed price or completion-time promise. [Claude for Word](https://claude.com/docs/office-agents/word) explains these access and usage conditions.

## Rewrite one passage and decide each revision

1. **Open the document and select the exact passage.** Check where the selection starts and ends, especially around a heading, list item, footnote marker or sentence that carries a qualification. Read the preceding and following text so you know what the rewrite must continue to mean. Anthropic says a selected-text edit is confined to the selection and new text inherits surrounding styles and numbering; check the actual result rather than assuming every format will survive.
2. **Enter Claude's tracked changes mode before sending the request.** In the Word add-in, use its tracked changes mode so Claude's edit appears as a deletion and an insertion in Word. Then ask for a bounded language change. For example: “Rewrite only the selected passage for clarity. Keep every fact, number, qualification and intended meaning. Do not add information or change the surrounding text.” This is an editing instruction, not a request to verify the underlying facts. [Anthropic documents selection editing and tracked changes mode](https://claude.com/docs/office-agents/word).
3. **Read the proposed deletion and insertion together.** Compare each new claim with the original and the surrounding paragraph. Check numbers, names, dates, attribution, conditions and any change in certainty. Also inspect paragraph style, font, spacing, bullets or numbering, and the transition into the next passage. The expected result is a proposed revision you can examine, not a finished document.
4. **Accept or reject each change in Word.** Use Word's **Review** tab and its individual **Accept** or **Reject** controls. **Next** and **Previous** let you inspect changes before deciding; Microsoft also documents a single-change context control. Keep unrelated, pre-existing revisions for their own reviewer rather than using **Accept All** or **Reject All** on the document. [Microsoft's review instructions](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/word/accept-or-reject-tracked-changes-in-word) cover the web, Windows and Mac interfaces.
5. **Check the final document and save it.** Read the passage once more without relying on the redline, then inspect its neighboring text and formatting. Confirm that no unwanted proposed change remains. Microsoft warns that **No Markup** only hides revisions; it does not dispose of them. Before sharing, inspect the actual revision state and resolve any changes you are responsible for. Save the document once the wording and review state are correct.

If the proposal changes the facts or wanders beyond the intended passage, reject the affected revisions. Anthropic also documents Word's ordinary **Ctrl+Z** on Windows or **Cmd+Z** on Mac for undoing an edit. Check the document state after either action, make a fresh, narrower selection and try again in tracked changes mode. Review that new proposal just as closely; a second request does not validate the first.

## What the selection does not protect

Anthropic says Claude reads the **currently open document**, including its text, comments, tracked changes, footnotes, tables and bookmarks. Selecting one passage scopes the requested edit, not this read access. Use trusted documents: Anthropic warns that hidden instructions in externally supplied document content can try to redirect the add-in. Review any request for a risky operation before confirming it, and keep sensitive or privileged material within your organization's approved controls. No Excel, Outlook or other app connection is needed for this one-document procedure. [Anthropic's data handling and prompt-injection guidance](https://claude.com/docs/office-agents/word) gives the boundaries.

Anthropic says add-in inputs and outputs are deleted on its backend within 30 days, subject to its stated exceptions and temporary cache, while chat history is stored locally in the browser. Claude for Word does **not** inherit an organization's custom Claude retention settings. Enterprise audit logs do not include this activity, though Anthropic says eligible Enterprise Compliance API sessions are included in that API's public beta. Check the current policy and your organization's requirements before opening a sensitive document. Human review remains necessary for client-facing, legal, financial or other consequential text.
