A competitor profile can go wrong before the comparison begins: a search result may point to a namesake, and a polished summary may turn a vendor claim into a fact. This local Python workflow starts with a company name and a real decision question. It uses OpenAI's native Responses web search to discover candidates, pauses for you to verify the exact company and official product page, checks that page with a bounded public HTTPS GET, and drafts Product, Market, Strengths and Weaknesses. You then open the cited pages, classify each claim and approve one exact saved draft before the program makes a clickable HTML and JSON report. The code passed synthetic offline checks under Python 3.12.7. No account, real company, paid request or live company-page retrieval was tested for this guide.

The big change

  • What changed: One reproducible workflow keeps discovery, an operator-confirmed identity, an actual official-page retrieval receipt, a four-section searched draft and a reviewed final report together.
  • Why it matters: A search citation or company webpage can show what was said without proving a comparison. The final report labels vendor claims and independently verified facts, and says Unknown when evidence is missing.
  • What to watch: The human still has to check identity, dates, contrary evidence and rights. The script holds ambiguous citations, incomplete searches, unsafe retrievals and stale review records; it cannot certify the reviewer's judgment.

What you need

Use Windows with PowerShell 7.3 or newer and an installed Python 3.12 with the py launcher. The script supports Python 3.11+, and the approved offline suite ran under installed Python 3.12.7; these copyable commands select Python 3.12. The complete script uses only the Python standard library, so there is no package installation or lockfile. Check the versions in the same PowerShell window you will use:

PowerShell
$PSVersionTable.PSVersion
py --list-paths
py -3.12 --version

The commands below use py -3.12 consistently. If that selector does not resolve an installed Python 3.12 interpreter, install it and confirm the selector before running. You also need an authorized OpenAI API project with access to the Responses API, gpt-6-luna and native web_search; the model page documents the model and tool, but your project's entitlement and limits remain account-specific. Prepare a real company name, market context and specific comparison question that you have the right to submit. Avoid confidential plans and personal data unless your organization has approved their use. Review current API pricing and your spending controls before a paid step.

Save the complete competitor_profile.py and input.example.json blocks below in the same private working directory. The example deliberately contains no company. Enter the API key only in the current PowerShell session through a masked prompt. PowerShell documents Read-Host -MaskInput as masked string entry; the value still exists in the process environment and is inherited by Python.

Run the three stages

1. Discover and confirm the exact company

Copy and fill all three strings. This discovery stage makes a paid Responses request with web_search required, external web access enabled and store:false. It requires an explicitly completed response and completed actual search action, cited text and valid citation offsets. It saves the original output text, citation spans, selected search records when returned, and a readable discovery.html whose source links are clickable. The model's first candidate is a lead, not an identity decision.

PowerShell
Copy-Item .\input.example.json .\input.json
notepad .\input.json
$env:OPENAI_API_KEY = Read-Host -Prompt 'OpenAI API key' -MaskInput
py -3.12 .\competitor_profile.py discover --input .\input.json --output-dir .\discovery-1
Invoke-Item .\discovery-1\discovery.html

Open the candidate links yourself. Confirm the exact company's name, domain and product from the page actually shown, including jurisdiction if names collide. Choose a discovery-cited public HTTPS page whose URL loads directly without a redirect. Copy the generated blank review template, and enter the exact companyName, cited selectedUrl, its exact hostname as officialDomain, observed identity and product evidence, the real timezone-aware UTC opening time and confirmedByOperator:true. The code checks that the URL was cited in this discovery; your observation establishes whether the page is truly official. If no candidate can be confirmed, stop or make a new discovery with clearer disambiguating input.

PowerShell
Copy-Item .\discovery-1\identity-review.template.json .\identity-review.json
notepad .\identity-review.json

2. Retrieve the official page, then draft the profile

This command first resolves the reviewed hostname and rejects the whole address set if any answer is not public. It connects to one checked numeric IP on port 443 while using the original hostname for TLS SNI and default certificate verification. It does not use environment proxies or follow redirects. The exact URL must return HTTP 200, HTML, a title and 100–524,288 body bytes within the 30-second socket timeout. Only after that GET succeeds does the second paid Responses request begin.

PowerShell
py -3.12 .\competitor_profile.py report --discovery .\discovery-1\discovery.json --identity-review .\identity-review.json --output-dir .\report-1
Invoke-Item .\report-1\report-draft.html

official-page-retrieval.json records the exact URL, UTC time, byte length, body SHA-256 and title. It does not save the page body. The receipt proves this script fetched those bytes; it cannot prove the search model saw the identical page version. The saved report-draft.json binds exact byte snapshots of discovery and your identity review plus that retrieval receipt. The second request requires a completed native search, Product and Market citations, all four sections in order, and at least one exact citation to the retrieved page. report-draft.html offers clickable links beside the original text. It remains unverified model output.

3. Check claims and finalize one exact draft

Reopen the selected official page and every material cited source. Check product identity, audience, availability, dates, pricing, each comparative statement and relevant contrary or newer evidence. A vendor statement stays vendor-claim even if another vendor-controlled hostname repeats it. Mark independently-verified only when an opened independent source supports that precise sentence. Put Unknown in Strengths or Weaknesses when the evidence cannot support a conclusion; silence is not a defect or an advantage. Product and Market require supported identity and scope or the whole report stays held. This single-company report is not a procurement ranking. Research each named rival and independent comparison evidence separately if your decision really requires a ranking.

Copy the generated review template and edit claims under each of its four sections. Each claim needs text, one classification (vendor-claim, independently-verified or unknown), and sourceUrls drawn from the saved report citations. Unknown has no source URLs and its text must start with “Unknown”. Set each section's decision and overallDecision to approved only after resolving every material claim. Record the real officialPageOpenedAgainAtUtc and meaningful operatorNotes. Keep all four generated expected...Sha256 values unchanged: they bind the review to the draft, retrieval, identity review and discovery you saw. New outside evidence needs a new cited research draft before this program can bind it.

PowerShell
Copy-Item .\report-1\fact-review.template.json .\fact-review.json
notepad .\fact-review.json
py -3.12 .\competitor_profile.py finalize --report-draft .\report-1\report-draft.json --fact-review .\fact-review.json --output-dir .\checked-1
Invoke-Item .\checked-1\checked-report.html

The finished checked-report.html has the four sections, explicit claim labels and clickable source links. checked-report.json records the reviewed claims and exact draft, review and provenance hashes. Check that every link opens the intended evidence and that the labels reflect what you actually verified. The finalizer reads one draft and review snapshot and validates their shape and linkage; it cannot establish that a human's claim or classification is true. Keep the discovery, retrieval, draft and review records alongside the final result.

Costs, holds and data

discover and report each make one Responses request, and either request may cause more than one billable web-search call. Model input/output and search-content tokens can also be billed. The local official-page GET and finalize make no model request. No actual spend was measured. There is no automatic retry: a timeout or malformed response does not prove zero usage. Inspect your project usage and any partial files before choosing a new output directory. Output directories are created exclusively; a name collision during a paid request moves a successful result to a unique .recovered-... directory rather than overwriting files.

Wrong company, uncited selected URL, missing search completion, invalid citation offsets, redirect/nonpublic official page, absent sections or unresolved review are holds. Correct the input or review only after reading the saved evidence; rerun a paid stage only with a fresh output name. A site needing a proxy, redirect or different port requires manual examination. Do not weaken the public-IP, direct-TLS or provenance checks to force it through.

The script sends your inputs and prompts to OpenAI and reads public pages. It saves selected API text blocks, citations, usage and search-source records when returned, not the untouched full API response and not the retrieved HTML body. store:false avoids ordinary response application-state storage; OpenAI's data controls describe separate abuse-monitoring logs, normally up to 30 days subject to exceptions. Check source-page terms and OpenAI's Services Agreement before reusing material. Do not copy long source passages into a report. The visible clickable links satisfy the web-search display requirement, but they do not transfer rights or prove claims.

Copy the complete project

Save the following blocks under their exact filenames. The identity and fact-review examples after the code explain the generated template fields; use the files generated for your run because only they contain the correct saved hashes. The code below is complete; it does not fetch a private project file or require a package download.

Generated identity-review.template.json

The discovery stage writes this blank template. Fill a copied file with observed facts; do not edit the generated template in place. The values shown here intentionally approve no identity.

Generated fact-review.template.json

The report stage writes this structure with four real computed hashes already filled. The placeholders here only show which values you must preserve from the generated file. Replace the blank company and review fields, then add one or more individually checked claim objects to each section. A supported claim uses a cited URL; an Unknown claim uses an empty URL list. Never type the placeholder hashes into a real review.

For a supported Product or Market sentence, a claim entry has this shape, with the precise wording and a URL that appears in your saved report citations:

JSON
{"text": "<your checked sentence>", "classification": "vendor-claim", "sourceUrls": ["<cited URL>"]}

For an unsupported Strengths or Weaknesses conclusion, make the uncertainty explicit:

JSON
