Digital Science [announced on October 29](https://www.digital-science.com/press-releases/digital-science-acquires-jenni-ai/) that it has acquired Jenni AI, a research and writing assistant. Jenni will continue as a standalone product under its own name, with the same team, pricing and subscription plans, the company says. It plans to incorporate data from Dimensions, which it says contains 171 million research publications, over the coming months.
## The big change
- The planned connection brings a publication database closer to finding sources and developing a draft.
- Identifying a paper is one part of a citation workflow. A researcher also has to establish whether the paper supports the specific statement being made, which requires examining its contents.
- A study of other language models found both fabricated references and errors in references to real papers. For students and researchers, those are separate reasons to check a bibliography; the study does not measure Jenni’s performance.
## How Jenni describes its workflow
Digital Science says users can import papers or references, explore sources, draft and check citations against originals.
Digital Science intends to use Dimensions data and full-text search to help users discover, understand and cite scholarly literature. No rollout or improvement was reported. BIG CHANGE has not tested Jenni or the planned integration.
[Dimensions’ search documentation](https://help.dimensions.ai/en/articles/9779009) explains what searching its existing database involves: its full-data search covers available metadata, including titles and abstracts, and searches indexed full text where available. The documentation says roughly 70% of publications have full text indexed, but that text may not be readable within Dimensions. A search can therefore return a relevant record without displaying the passage that matched. The announcement does not specify how those existing search features will appear inside Jenni.
## Finding a paper is only the first check
A [2023 study of ChatGPT-generated references](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10484980/) illustrates why both source existence and bibliographic accuracy matter. Researchers prompted GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 to produce short literature reviews on 42 multidisciplinary topics, then checked 636 citations across the resulting 84 texts. In that sample, 55% of GPT-3.5 references and 18% of GPT-4 references were fabricated. Even among references to real works, the researchers found substantive citation errors: 43% for GPT-3.5 and 24% for GPT-4.
Those figures describe that experiment and its models, not current products generally or Jenni. They also distinguish two failures that can be easy to confuse: a paper can be nonexistent, or it can exist while its citation contains wrong details. A further reading check asks whether the paper actually supports the statement citing it. A catalogue match by itself cannot answer that question; the paper’s content and the claim have to be compared.
For a student or researcher, the practical distinction is between a source being discoverable and a claim being supported by it. [Earlier BIG CHANGE reporting on research integrity](https://bigchange.ai/blog/ai-research-discovery-review-capacity) explores the wider challenge of checking AI-assisted discoveries.
