The difficult part of a competitive report is making every company comparison use the same yardstick, then deciding whether two market estimates measure the same thing. This guide takes an analyst from a defined decision and named companies through Gemini Deep Research to a checked export with an identified human approver. It uses [Google's instructions](https://support.google.com/gemini/answer/15719111); BIG CHANGE has not run this task in an account or verified a generated report.
## The big change
- **What changed:** Gemini offers plan editing and export.
- **Why it matters:** A business owner can ask one report to compare several named companies and assess a defined market. A common comparison frame and source record make the draft useful for a decision review, while the person signing off remains responsible for every material claim.
- **What to watch:** The decision turns on whether the exported comparison covers every firm on the same terms and whether market figures share a period, geography, definition and method. Gaps and conflicting estimates belong in the finished record.
## Set the decision before opening Gemini
Choose the actual companies and their official domains. Name the decision owner, audience, geography, customer segment and period. Decide which product dimensions matter, then require those dimensions for *every* company. Keep the market question separate: a product comparison cannot establish market size or growth. The market section needs its own original sources, definitions, units, dates and methods.
The brief below is deliberately blank. Fill it with real names and permitted sources before submitting it. Do not put confidential records, personal information or material from a connected account into the prompt without the owner's permission.

# Research brief
Decision owner and intended readers:
Exact decision and deadline:
Named companies, their official domains, and inclusion rule:
Geography, customer segment, market definition, and study period:
Company dimensions to apply identically to every firm:
Market questions to answer, with required units and definitions:
Public sources to prioritize and minimum acceptable source dates:
Approved internal sources, owner, dates, access rights, and permitted audience (or none):
Excluded sources and confidential information:
Required report sections: company comparison; defined-market findings;
competing estimates and methods; unknowns; linked originals; decision memo.
Named person who will check the exported revision:
Prompt to submit with the filled brief:
Research the named companies and the defined market for the stated decision,
geography, segment, and period. Use every listed company dimension for every
company. Identify each firm's official domain and distinguish its own claims
from independent evidence. For every market figure, give the original source,
publication date, geography, period, unit, definition, and method when known.
Place conflicting estimates side by side and explain differences in scope;
do not average incompatible figures. Mark missing, stale, or inaccessible
evidence unknown. Keep approved internal evidence separate from public
research. Deliver a company comparison, market findings, limitations, linked
originals, and a decision memo. Do not infer private-company financials from
marketing pages or fill a gap with an invented fact.
```
## Run the research and inspect its plan
1. **Check access and source rights.** Open [Gemini](https://gemini.google.com) on a computer and sign in; users must be at least 18. Google Search is selected by default. Add only approved files or NotebookLM notebooks. Gmail and Drive require the Google Workspace app connection. Record the selected sources in the review record. Expected result: a brief whose evidence boundary is explicit.
2. **Submit the filled brief.** Choose **Add Files** > **Deep Research**. Adjust **Sources**, enter the prompt and choose **Submit**. Inspect the plan through **Edit plan**: check every company, shared dimension, market boundary, source type and uncertainty rule. Remove unapproved sources. Expected result: a plan that covers both the comparison and market report. Revise the brief if either part is missing.
3. **Start and open the draft.** Choose **Start research**, then **Open** the finished report. Past reports appear under **Recent** only with **Keep Activity** on; decide whether that retention setting fits your organization before relying on it. Expected result: a report to verify, with its plan and source selection recorded. If a request limit or incomplete result interrupts the run, save the exact state before deciding whether to rerun.
4. **Verify the company comparison.** Open the original behind each material citation. Confirm that the company is the intended one, the official domain is correct, and the cited page supports the stated feature, availability or dated price. Compare identical definitions and units across firms. Label vendor statements as vendor claims. Enter omitted firms, unsupported cells and contrary or newer evidence in the review record. Expected result: a comparison whose empty cells say *unknown*.
5. **Reconcile the market section.** For each material figure, record the original source's date, geography, period, unit, market definition and method. Put competing estimates alongside each other. A figure about a different geography or segment is context, not a replacement for the requested market. Keep a conflict open when the original methods do not permit reconciliation. Expected result: market findings that distinguish comparable evidence from unresolved estimates.
6. **Add approved internal evidence, then export.** If the owner permits internal sales or customer records, identify their date, method and audience in a separate layer. Review the report in its Canvas panel and choose **Share & export** then **Export to Docs**, or **Copy Contents** if that route better fits access rights. Open the exported copy. Check the first and last citations, every company row, the full market section, links, corrections and caveats. Record the document's exact location and revision. A missing section or broken source link requires repair before signoff.
7. **Obtain exact human signoff.** The named reviewer checks the exported revision against the originals and signs the review record below. Approve only that revision for its specified audience. If the evidence cannot answer the decision, leave the conclusion open and state what additional permitted source would resolve it.
# Report review record
Decision and research brief revision:
Research chat or private report identifier:
Research plan reviewed at (UTC), edits made, and sources selected:
Report opened at (UTC):
Export location and exact document revision:
Intended audience and access permission:
Named reviewer and review date (UTC):
| Claim and location in export | Cited original URL | Source date, geography, period, unit, definition and method | Vendor claim, independent evidence or authorized internal record | Contrary or newer evidence | Decision and correction |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Add one row for each material claim or figure | | | | | |
Company coverage: list every named firm and official domain; confirm the same
dimensions and units for each. Record missing or unsupported cells as unknown.
Market coverage: compare the definition and method of every material estimate;
retain unresolved conflicts and identify unavailable original sources.
Export integrity: confirm the first and last citations, every company row,
market section, links, limitations and corrections survived the export.
Internal layer: identify owner, permission, date and audience, or write none.
Decision: approved exact revision / held for evidence / held for correction.
Reason, remaining unknowns, and named reviewer's signoff:
## Access and limits
Google limits daily and concurrent requests. Gemini displays remaining requests near the daily limit; the manual promises no concurrent counter or fixed free allowance. All users can use Thinking; Pro and Ultra plans allow Pro reports and higher limits. Check the account's current terms before a repeat run. A new run needs a fresh plan and source check because its evidence may differ.
For a decision that needs a smaller first pass, see our [guide to a cited single-company competitor profile](https://bigchange.ai/blog/company-cited-competitor-profile-identity-review-guide). Its scope is one company. The procedure here adds comparable multi-company rows and a separately defined market analysis.
