Google began rolling out Personal Intelligence in Android Auto on October 20, 2026, bringing information from a driver's chosen Google apps into spoken Gemini responses. Owners of cars with Google built-in are due to get the feature in the coming months. The two car systems already offer Gemini, but this release changes the personal context it can use, subject to the account owner's settings and eligibility.
The big change
- What changed: Gemini can use connected Google app data to answer a driver's request in the car, such as finding an appointment address in Calendar or a place in Photos. Google says the feature is starting in Android Auto; the Google-built-in rollout follows later.
- Why it matters: A voice request can now draw on details a driver would otherwise have to find in another app. That convenience depends on giving Gemini access to personal data, including material that may be sensitive. The decision sits in the user's Gemini settings, and an existing opt-in carries into the car.
- What to watch: Google has given no exact date or supported vehicle list for Personal Intelligence in cars with Google built-in. Its availability will also depend on the account, region, connected apps and vehicle software, so the feature's reach cannot be read from Gemini's broader car availability.
What Gemini can use
In its October 20 announcement, Google says Personal Intelligence can draw on connected information from Google Workspace, including Gmail and Calendar, plus Photos, Maps, YouTube and Search. It gives examples of asking for a flight gate and current flight status, navigating to an appointment without stating its address, or finding a place shown in a photo. These are Google's examples of intended behavior, not tasks BIG CHANGE tested in a car.
Google's Connected Apps help page describes a wider set of eligible services under Workspace and Search services. It also lists Photos, YouTube, Contacts and Wallet, with additional eligibility rules for some of them. The car announcement names a narrower set; it does not establish that every supported app or function in the Gemini phone app will work in every vehicle. In a personalized response, Gemini may use information across connected apps as well as a user's Gemini chat context and preferences, according to Google's Personal Intelligence overview.
Two routes into the car
Android Auto uses a connected Android phone and a compatible car display. Google's car help page says Gemini requires an Android 11 or newer phone with at least 2 GB of RAM, Gemini set as the phone's digital assistant, and a car that supports Android Auto. Personal Intelligence is rolling out on that route now, so having Gemini in Android Auto does not itself mean the new personalization is already available on an account.
Cars with Google built-in run Google's apps and services in the vehicle. Gemini is already available on eligible vehicles, but Google says Personal Intelligence will reach them in the coming months. To use Gemini in a compatible car, Google's help page calls for a Google Account signed into the vehicle and Gemini enabled in its settings. Vehicle maker, region, language, software and data connection can affect availability. Google says these cars will share personal responses only while the user is in the car with their phone connected. It has not specified in the announcement how that presence condition is checked.
These rollout dates concern Personal Intelligence, not the arrival of Gemini itself in cars. Google's announcement says Gemini is already available globally on Android Auto and cars with Google built-in. Google calls the wider Personal Intelligence rollout a beta. The feature is limited to eligible personal Google accounts belonging to people 18 or older. It excludes Workspace business, enterprise and education accounts, and is not rolling out in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom or Nigeria. Google describes a gradual rollout, so an eligible driver may still have to wait.
The permission and privacy decision
Google says the apps are not connected for Personal Intelligence until a user opts in. Someone who has already enabled it in the Gemini app brings those choices into the car. An eligible user can open Personal Intelligence → Connected Apps in the Gemini app to choose services or disconnect them. Google's setup instructions say Keep Activity must be on for Personal Intelligence. Search, YouTube, Workspace and Photos personalization have further settings or regional conditions. On cars with Google built-in, in-car Gemini settings also offer app connection controls; the Personal Intelligence launch date for those cars remains later.
The choice goes beyond whether a car passenger hears a personal answer. Google's data-use explanation says connected data can include emails, files, events, photos, saved activity and information inferred from them. It says Gemini Apps activity, which may include data from connected apps, can be used to improve Google services and train generative AI when Keep Activity is on. Google says it does not train directly on an entire Gmail inbox, Workspace app or Photos library, but relevant summaries, excerpts, inferences, prompts and responses may be used. A subset may receive human review. Disconnecting an app does not erase information already held in Gemini Apps Activity; that activity has a separate deletion control.
Drivers who leave Personal Intelligence off can still use Gemini's ordinary car functions, including navigation, music, calls and general questions, Google says. Its car guidance also warns that Gemini can give inaccurate answers and should not be relied on for critical or safety-related information while driving. The announcement describes an assistant retrieving information and starting navigation; it makes no claim that Personal Intelligence drives the car or changes driver assistance.
