Goldman Sachs [announced its Small Business AI Institute](https://www.goldmansachs.com/pressroom/press-releases/2026/goldman-sachs-commits-500-million-to-launch-small-business-ai-institute) on October 22.

## The big change

- **What changed:** Four partners will offer different forms of AI instruction.
- **Why it matters:** Google's separate, open small-business offer shows what a usable route can specify: who qualifies, where to apply and how access is granted. Those details matter to an owner deciding whether staff can start learning now.
- **What to watch:** Eligibility will establish access; participant results will establish effects.

## What each partner is meant to provide

Goldman lists an Anthropic learning series and alumni workshops; Google certificates for almost 20,000 owners and employees plus three months of Google AI Pro; Meta Muse training; and OpenAI workshops with community colleges. [Our Muse report](https://bigchange.ai/blog/meta-muse-small-business-connectors-approvals) covers a separate product rollout.

[Google's own small-business page](https://grow.google/ai-for-small-businesses/) already offers a certificate scholarship. It says US businesses with at most 500 employees and an employer identification number can apply through Coursera. The certificate covers seven courses and more than 20 activities; the offer includes three months of Google AI Pro and Workspace Business Standard. Google says access typically follows within three to seven business days of signing up, subject to eligibility review. Google does not identify this as a Goldman institute offer.

Google says a credit card is required to verify identity, while the training itself is free. Its Workspace promotion is limited to new Workspace customers and at most 300 seats; the page's terms set December 15, 2026, for enrollment and December 31, 2026, for redemption. Those conditions belong to Google's published scholarship offer.

## The $500 million is a wider commitment

The $500 million covers education, capital access and services for another 10,000 businesses. No AI-only allocation is given, so spending per trainee cannot be calculated.

## Alumni responses explain the demand, not the outcome

Goldman's [October alumni report](https://www.goldmansachs.com/pdfs/community-transformation/small-business-ai-institute/ai-impact-report.pdf) says 86% of respondents used AI, 15% had fully integrated it into core operations and 77% wanted more training and resources. The survey predates the institute; it measures no training outcome.

Babson College surveyed alumni August 10–24. Of 14,967 invited, 2,473 responded, a 16.5% response rate; 2,117 responses were complete and 356 partial. This self-report covers participating graduates, not all small businesses. Comparisons with earlier survey years need not track the same firms and cannot establish that training caused business gains.

Among surveyed nonusers, 45% said they did not know how to apply AI in their business, 32% cited privacy concerns and 28% worried about inaccurate results. These answers point to concrete training needs within this group. Results cannot establish effectiveness.

For an owner, the practical next step is to match an available offer to the business's eligibility and staff needs. Institute enrollment dates and delivery details remain unspecified.
