# Google's Universal Cart rolls out in the U.S. across Search and Gemini

> Google's shared cart now rolls out in U.S. Search and Gemini. It can track products from several retailers, while checkout follows Google Pay or each merchant's own cart and the merchant remains the seller.

Google [began rolling out Universal Cart in the U.S. on October 15](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/shopping/universal-cart-launch/), bringing the shared shopping list it previewed in May to Search and the Gemini app. The cart holds products saved from different retailers across those Google services. Google says it can watch for price drops and restocks, show relevant promotions and card perks, and offer two routes to purchase. The retailer remains the seller either way.

That last point matters for anyone expecting one order that combines several stores. Universal Cart organizes the items together, but Google's launch description does not say it turns a mixed-retailer list into a single merchant transaction. Google says shoppers can use Google Pay within the cart with participating stores or send items to the merchant's cart to finish on its site. The merchant sends the confirmation and handles customer support.

## The big change

- **What changed:** A cart that Google previewed in May is now rolling out across Search and Gemini in the U.S. Shoppers can bring finds from several retailers into one saved list, while each purchase still belongs to its merchant.
- **Why it matters:** The list puts saved items, price and stock notices, promotions and Wallet card perks near the purchase decision. Google gains a role in organizing the shopping trip, but the retailer remains the seller and handles confirmation and support.
- **What to watch:** At checkout, the route offered for each item matters: Google Pay in the cart or a transfer to the merchant's cart. Shoppers need to check the final terms with the seller. Google's launch post gives no complete list of eligible products or retailers.

## What shoppers can use now

Google's October launch post describes saving products while shopping in Search or Gemini and finding them again later. It also describes notifications when a saved item's price drops or it returns to stock. The company says the cart can identify relevant promo codes and use Wallet information about payment-card perks to help a shopper choose a payment method. These are Google-described capabilities; BIG CHANGE has not tested their accuracy, account requirements or availability for a particular product or card.

At checkout, Google names Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, Wayfair and many Shopify merchants as examples for simplified purchase experiences. It does not say that every item from those retailers supports each route, or that every retailer can be checked out inside Google's cart. The useful question at the point of purchase is which route the cart offers for the selected item. With either Google Pay checkout or a transfer to the retailer's site, Google says the retailer remains the seller of record and provides the order confirmation and customer support.

## The May preview went further than this launch

In [its May 19 preview](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/shopping/google-shopping-cart/), Google described Universal Cart eventually working while people watched YouTube or read Gmail, and gave an example of identifying incompatible PC components. That post said YouTube and Gmail would follow Search and Gemini. The October launch names Search and Gemini as the U.S. rollout surfaces and does not confirm YouTube, Gmail or compatibility checking as live Universal Cart features.

The October announcement also leaves practical questions open. It does not provide a complete retailer or product eligibility list, terms for notifications, or measured results for promo matching and card-perk recommendations. Shoppers should check the price, availability, promotion and payment terms shown at the retailer's checkout before placing an order. The available evidence here is Google's product announcement, not a BIG CHANGE purchase test.
