Google and Voltus expanded their PJM demand-response deal on October 22.

## The big change

- **What changed:** Google expanded a PJM contract for customer load reductions. The announced size is disputed.
- **Why it matters:** Homes and businesses can earn payments for lowering demand. That gives data-center planners a potential capacity resource without adding generation.
- **What to watch:** PJM accreditation and measured reductions would show how much capacity is available. The October releases report neither.

## How the capacity would work

Voltus says participating batteries, thermostats and industrial operations can cut consumption when signaled. PJM describes demand response as voluntary, compensated load reduction during high prices or reliability threats. The contracted resource is flexible demand, not new generation.

The [original June 2 agreement](https://www.voltus.co/press/voltus-google-bring-your-own-capacity-pjm) covered **up to 100 MW** of distributed capacity each year for three years.

## The capacity figures conflict

[Google](https://blog.google/innovation-and-ai/infrastructure-and-cloud/global-network/virtual-power-plant-1-gigawatt/) calls the project **1 GW**, a tenfold increase from 100 MW. [Voltus](https://www.voltus.co/press/google-voltus-1gw) calls it 1 GW yet says it adds **1,070 MW** after 100 MW. Neither explains the difference, so their statements do not establish a precise combined figure.
