Kalepa has raised $75 million in a Series B round at a $470 million valuation to expand AI software used by insurers. The company says its platform helps organize work across underwriting and pricing, while insurers decide which tasks need human judgment.

## The big change

- Kalepa says agents assess submissions against rules and insurer-set authority.
- Its CEO says exceptions are escalated with evidence.
- Insurance oversight still matters when software supports a decision affecting a customer; faster processing alone does not establish accuracy or fairness.

## The funding and the work

[Kalepa announced](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/ai/articles/kalepa-raises-75-million-470-130000635.html) the financing on November 5. Updata Partners led the round, joined by IA Ventures and Inspired Capital. Kalepa says it plans to expand its products, enter new markets and double its headcount in 2027. It lists insurers and managing general agents among its customers.

Commercial underwriters evaluate a business’s exposure and decide whether to insure it and at what price. The [Insurance Information Institute](https://www.iii.org/publication/commercial-insurance/how-it-functions/company-operations) explains that applications can be supplemented with other reports; a factory, for example, may require a fire-hazard survey. Coverage and pricing depend on the particular risk, not just a single application field.

## From submission to review

In an [interview with Finextra](https://www.finextra.com/newsarticle/48707/kalepa-raises-75m-to-expand-ai-underwriting-platform), CEO Paul Monasterio said Kalepa can reconcile applications with loss histories, identify missing or conflicting information, and apply an insurer’s underwriting and pricing rules. This organizes information for a decision on a specific submission.

Monasterio said agents can assess fit, prioritize opportunities and prepare quotes within authority granted by the insurer. A case within established guidelines can proceed without an underwriter reviewing every step; exceptions are escalated with evidence. Those are company claims, not evidence of error-free decisions.

An earlier [Kalepa case study](https://kalepa.com/case-studies/driving-profitable-growth-bowhead-specialtys-results-with-kalepa) describes specialty insurer Bowhead bringing research, data and guidelines into one workspace and surfacing information missing from broker submissions. It includes customer comments, but is published by the vendor and does not independently establish a causal improvement or a result for other insurers.

## What remains to verify

The [National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ model bulletin](https://content.naic.org/article/naic-members-approve-model-bulletin-use-ai-insurers) identifies risks including inaccurate information, unfair discrimination and data vulnerability. It is guidance for state regulators, not a model law or a finding about Kalepa. Insurers remain responsible for decisions under applicable laws and rules.

For an insurer, traceable evidence and clear escalation can make a recommendation easier to scrutinize, but the organization still has to check data, outputs and the authority it grants. The material available does not establish independent error rates or prove better pricing across customers. BIG CHANGE did not test Kalepa.
