# Build a local AI product copy review app and check every claim

> Build a single-user Python app that reviews product copy against approved facts, shows quoted issues, and saves the human-edited version in local SQLite.

A product description can sound polished while making a claim that the owner's records do not support. This guide shows a small-business owner or product marketer how to build a local AI product copy review app. It sends an approved fact sheet and draft copy to OpenAI, shows short issues tied to exact phrases, and saves the owner's edited version only after an explicit click. You need Python 3.11 or later, an OpenAI API key with access to the specified model, and facts and copy you are permitted to send to that account.

## The big change

- **What changed:** A product owner can run a model review on each draft inside a local app, using an approved fact sheet as the reference. The complete code below requests structured issues and checks that each quoted phrase actually appears in the submitted draft.
- **Why it matters:** The product owner can see where to inspect a claim, edit the final wording and keep a local record of what was reviewed. Quoting the draft establishes where an issue came from; it does not prove a claim true. The human reviewer must check flagged and unflagged claims against real evidence.
- **What to watch:** The owner still decides whether the final wording is supported and whether the account's data terms and charges are acceptable. The saved row documents the reviewed text; using that text in a shop or campaign needs a separate human decision.

## 1. Prepare the facts, account and local folder

Put the verified product facts and the description you want reviewed in files or notes you control. Check specifications, measurements and allowed wording against your actual product records. Remove secrets and personal data, and confirm that your organization permits sending both fields to the OpenAI API. The app has no source lookup: the fact sheet you provide is the model's only product evidence.

Create an API key in the intended OpenAI project and confirm that it can use `gpt-5.4-mini-2026-03-17`. The [official model card](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/models/gpt-5.4-mini), checked on 22 October 2026, listed standard text rates of **$0.75 per million input tokens** and **$4.50 per million output tokens** for this model. These are rates, not a measured bill for this guide. The app limits model output to 1,200 tokens, but does not impose a fixed dollar ceiling on input or total use. Check current pricing and your account's actual limits before a paid request. [OpenAI's project settings guidance](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9186755-managing-projects-in-the-api-platform) says spend alerts notify rather than stop requests; optional hard-limit enforcement can be delayed after the tracked threshold is reached.

Make a new folder, then save the entire Python listing below as `product_copy_review.py`. It uses the Python standard library, serves only `127.0.0.1`, and creates `product-copy-reviews.sqlite3` next to the script when it first accesses storage. Keep that database and your key out of a public repository. The database holds the fact sheet, original and accepted copy, model issues, response ID and token usage. Back it up or remove it according to your own retention rules.

Set `OPENAI_API_KEY` in the terminal that will run the server. The [OpenAI quickstart](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/quickstart) documents environment-variable key setup. In PowerShell, use:

```powershell
$env:OPENAI_API_KEY = '<your project API key>'
```

On macOS or Linux, use:

```shell
export OPENAI_API_KEY='<your project API key>'
```

Do not put the key in the Python file or browser page. The local Python process makes the API request. A loopback listener limits network exposure, but the fact sheet and draft still go to OpenAI when you choose **Analyze copy**. The request uses `store: false`, which disables storing that response for later API retrieval; it does not waive the account's applicable data terms.

## 2. Save the complete local app

The listing contains the page, server, [Responses API](https://developers.openai.com/api/reference/resources/responses/methods/create) call, [strict structured-output schema](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/structured-outputs?api-mode=responses), local checks, SQLite history and offline self-test. Copy all of it into one file. It is designed for one person on one machine. Public hosting or shared access would require a separate authentication, transport, storage and abuse-control design.

## 3. Check the local mechanics and start the app

In the folder containing the file, check the Python version and run the offline self-test before starting the server:

```shell
python --version
python product_copy_review.py --self-test
python product_copy_review.py
```

Use `python3` in place of `python` where that is the name of your Python 3.11-or-later interpreter. The self-test should print `Local validation and SQLite tests passed; no model request was made.` Starting the server prints `http://127.0.0.1:8765/`; open that exact address in a browser on the same machine. If port 8765 is occupied, set `COPY_REVIEW_PORT` to an unused local port and open the newly printed address. Stop the process with Ctrl+C when finished.

BIG CHANGE checked the final reference with an offline self-test, two separate temporary-database synthetic HTTP runs, malformed response and history-error checks, and a synthetic UI interleaving check. Those checks exercised local mechanics with mocked model responses. We did not use an OpenAI account, make a paid call, submit real product facts, or observe a real model review or product outcome. Your first real analysis is the end-to-end provider and account check.

## 4. Analyze your draft, then edit and save

Paste your permitted fact sheet into **Verified product fact sheet** and your own draft into **Draft product description**. Each field accepts 20 to 8,000 Unicode characters; the complete encoded request is limited to 100,000 UTF-8 bytes. Select **Analyze copy** once. The server sends both inputs to the pinned model and asks for no more than five issues. Each issue has a copied phrase, a type, a reason and a proposed change. The app rejects an incomplete response, a refusal, malformed output, more than five issues or a phrase absent from your submitted draft. An empty issue list is possible and says nothing conclusive about accuracy.

Read every sentence of the draft, including claims the model did not flag. Verify each factual statement against your actual approved evidence, then edit **Final text after your review** yourself. The app does not silently replace it with model suggestions. Changing the fact sheet or draft after analysis requires a new analysis before Save becomes valid.

Select **Save reviewed version locally** once. A one-time analysis token binds the accepted text to that analysis and prevents a second save with the same token. The newest saved review appears under **Saved reviews**. Reload the page and check that the row remains. The page shows only the first 100 characters of the accepted text; the full record is in the local SQLite database. A saved row records your review action, not legal, factual or channel approval. Make that separate decision before using the copy elsewhere; this app publishes nothing.

## When a step fails

- **The self-test fails or the page does not open:** Confirm Python 3.11 or later, folder write permission, the printed loopback address and the selected port. The self-test makes no provider request.
- **The key or account is rejected:** Confirm the key belongs to the intended project and that the project can use the pinned model. Do not print or paste the key into a support post. No local review is saved after a failed analysis.
- **The provider returns HTTP 429:** Check the exact account error, rate and spend status using [OpenAI's error guidance](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/error-codes). The app has no automatic retry.
- **The request times out or its outcome is uncertain:** Nothing is saved locally, although the provider may have processed and billed the request. Inspect account usage before choosing to try again.
- **The output is incomplete, refused or fails a quote check:** Keep the draft unsaved. Inspect the failure and your model access; revise permitted inputs or the output cap only after you understand the cause.
- **Save or history fails:** Check disk space and file permissions. Read history or inspect the SQLite file before repeating an uncertain save. The one-time token is removed after a confirmed insert; do not assume an error message proves the database has no row.

For a different reviewed-output workflow, see BIG CHANGE's [guide to turning agent output into an action register](https://bigchange.ai/blog/agents-sdk-reviewed-action-register-guide). That guide starts with notes and a typed agent result; this app checks a product description during a live model request and stores the owner's accepted text.
