Perplexity lets people in the US and Canada link financial accounts on the web through Plaid and ask Computer about their finances. That access can make a portfolio question easier to ask, but the answer is only useful if you know which accounts and dates it covers. This guide takes you from consent through one checked answer to a later access review. BIG CHANGE used provider documentation; we did not connect an account or test an answer.

The big change

  • What changed: Perplexity's April 2026 web update added Plaid-backed bank, credit-card and loan connections to its Personal CFO experience in the US and Canada. A May 10 update raised its stated limit to 30 accounts and 500 assets per account. Individual access still depends on the actual account and institution.
  • Why it matters: A conversational answer can draw on personal financial records across connected accounts. The permission screen and the answer's account and date scope therefore matter as much as the wording of the question. Checking one value against an institution record can reveal a stale or incomplete answer before you use it.
  • What to watch: A Plaid disconnect stops future sharing through that connection, while Perplexity may still hold previously received data. Review the connection and any recipient-held data request separately, and keep the final provider response with your private record.

Before you connect

You need a Perplexity account on the web in the US or Canada, authority over the account you propose to link, and a separate institution statement or signed-in view for comparison. Check that the Finance Portfolio and relevant Computer controls appear in your own session. Perplexity's April announcement describes regional web availability; it does not confirm your plan, institution or today's controls. Review the current plan and Computer credit terms before running a task.

Read the current Perplexity Privacy Notice and the terms presented in the actual Plaid connection flow. Decide whether the displayed recipient, account selection, data categories, purpose and ongoing access are acceptable. The notice describes general processing and retention; it does not establish a finance-specific training exclusion. If the terms or recipient are unclear, leave the connection unapproved. Keep credentials, one-time codes, full account numbers and raw statements out of AI prompts and shared records.

Connect one account and check the scope

  1. Open Perplexity Finance Portfolio while signed in. Use the connection control actually shown in your session and select one intended institution. If the feature or institution is absent, record an access hold. Do not infer that a connection exists from the announcement.
  2. On the Plaid and institution screens, inspect the exact recipient, selected account, data types and continuing permission before authorizing. Confirm that authentication takes place in the legitimate institution or Plaid flow shown to you. Cancel if an unexpected account is selected or you cannot establish the permission scope.
  3. When the flow returns to Perplexity, read its connected-account list. Record the account type and whether only the intended account appears. If the result is pending or different from your selection, pause before asking a finance question. Check the existing connection and provider help before trying again. A second institution needs its own reviewed consent.

Plaid says its Portfolio integration supplies investment holdings, transactions, balances and securities data. Its description says Portfolio does not place trades or move funds. That statement covers Portfolio, not every other Computer feature. Perplexity's May 10 update states a ceiling of 30 accounts and 500 assets per account; neither number guarantees that a particular institution, field or account will appear.

Ask one bounded question, then reconcile it

  1. If the selected account appears, ask for a narrow read-only answer. Adapt this prompt to the data you actually consented to share:
Prompt
For my selected connected portfolio account, list the holdings used for the asset-class weights. State the account scope, currency, as-of date for holdings and prices, and the numerator and denominator for each weight. Identify missing accounts or values you cannot verify. Do not recommend a trade or move funds.
  1. Compare the answer with the separate institution view for the same account, currency and as-of date. Check one holding or balance and recalculate one weight from its stated numerator and denominator. Look for omitted or duplicate accounts, missing fields and stale prices. If the institution and answer use different dates or scopes, the result remains unknown until you can align them.
  2. Mark the result in the private record below as verified for this question and date, mismatch, or unknown. A verified value is a limited check, not a guarantee that every figure is correct. For a mismatch, note the discrepancy without exposing raw data, inspect the institution record and connection status, and ask a narrower clarification only when it could resolve the difference. Do not act on an unreconciled answer.

Review access and previously shared data

  1. Revisit Perplexity's connected-account view and Plaid Portal where available. Identify the exact app and institution before changing access. Plaid's disconnect instructions describe an app and institution selection in Portal. If you disconnect, check the status on both surfaces where possible and record when you checked. A missing Portal listing alone does not establish that no connection exists.
  2. Plaid says disconnecting stops future sharing through Plaid; the recipient may retain data it already received. To ask Perplexity about its copy, use the data privacy request form linked from its current Privacy Notice. If the form is unavailable, the notice lists support@perplexity.ai. State the recipient-held data scope you want reviewed without sending credentials. Track the acknowledgement and final response separately. The notice says identity verification may be required, requests can be limited or denied where permitted, and some data may be retained for legal, accounting or reporting purposes. An acknowledgement is not proof of erasure. A Plaid data deletion control addresses Plaid-held data, not automatically Perplexity's copy.

Costs and limits

The connection, question and data request have not been tested by BIG CHANGE. Availability, institution coverage, plan eligibility, Computer credits and terms can change; use the amounts and permissions displayed in your current session. Financial data may be delayed, incomplete or classified differently from the institution's records. The check above establishes only whether a chosen answer agrees with a chosen source at a chosen time. It is not investment, tax or legal advice and does not authorize a transaction.
