Tesla has replaced the “Full Self-Driving” name with “Tesla Assisted Driving” on its [Belgian product page](https://www.tesla.com/nl_be/tesla-assisted-driving). Germany says Tesla offered the new name during September talks about broader European recognition of the system. The label has changed; the approval question still depends on where a driver is.
## The big change
- **What changed:** Tesla’s Belgian site now calls the driver-assistance package Tesla Assisted Driving. Germany’s transport ministry says Tesla proposed that name during talks about an EU-level approval process.
- **Why it matters:** “Full Self-Driving” could suggest the system takes over the whole driving task. Germany says it does not: drivers must stay attentive and remain responsible. The new name makes that distinction more explicit, but does not alter the driver’s duty.
- **What remains unresolved:** Germany says European-level recognition is still being discussed. Some national approvals already exist: Tesla’s Belgian page currently says the system is legally approved there. That country-specific status is separate from approval across the EU.
The [German Federal Ministry for Transport’s October 6 statement](https://www.bmv.de/SharedDocs/DE/Artikel/StV/Digitalisierung-der-Mobilitaet/aktueller-stand-tesla-assistenzsysteme.html) describes the system as driver assistance that can help with steering, acceleration and braking. It says the driver must remain attentive at all times and is 100 percent responsible for safe vehicle operation. Minister Steffen Bilger said he would support moving the European approval process forward after the September discussions with Tesla.
Those discussions covered more than the name. The ministry says it and Tesla agreed the system could exceed the posted speed limit by up to 10 percent, and that Germany would support this approach in the European process. This is the ministry’s description of a proposal under discussion. The statement does not say that a speed allowance is now a uniform EU rule or that every version of the software uses it.
The Belgian [Tesla product page](https://www.tesla.com/nl_be/tesla-assisted-driving) adds a useful geographic distinction. Its Dutch-language version is headed “Tesla Assisted Driving” and says “now legally approved.” The company also says the package is available for activation only in markets where regulators have approved it, and that its current features still require active driver supervision. A decision affecting one country does not itself establish availability throughout the European Union.
The AI in the product is part of Tesla’s own description, not an independent performance finding. The company says onboard cameras provide a 360-degree view and that its vision-based AI makes driving decisions under the driver’s supervision. The ministry identifies driving tasks the system supports, but its statement does not disclose a technical architecture or independently evaluate the AI’s performance. The name change is not evidence of a software upgrade.
For drivers, the practical check is the local Tesla page and the vehicle’s own eligibility information. The label alone cannot tell someone whether the system is approved for their market, enabled on their vehicle or available with their installed hardware and software. Tesla’s [Belgian page](https://www.tesla.com/nl_be/tesla-assisted-driving) says approval has been obtained there; the German ministry’s [statement](https://www.bmv.de/SharedDocs/DE/Artikel/StV/Digitalisierung-der-Mobilitaet/aktueller-stand-tesla-assistenzsysteme.html) describes the remaining European-level process.
