Walmart already connects shopping to AI assistants including Sparky, Muse, ChatGPT and Gemini. Its [October 21 announcement](https://corporate.walmart.com/news/2026/10/Making-It-Possible-for-Agents-to-Shop-on-Behalf-of-Customers) describes a different change: a way to identify each outside agent within a customer's Walmart account, give it purchase permissions and connect approved agents directly to the retailer. Those pieces are at different stages. Agent Profiles are planned for the next month; the Walmart Agent Gateway is an invitation only early beta for companies and developers.
## The big change
- **What changed:** Walmart has published rules for agents shopping on its site and opened limited access to a direct agent connection. It plans separate profiles so customers can distinguish an agent's orders from their own and set approval or spending controls for that agent.
- **Why it matters:** Delegated shopping moves the purchase decision across a boundary between a customer's account, an outside agent and the retailer. Walmart's design puts the permission and order record in the retailer account, while its terms still make the customer responsible for payment, returns and disputes. That gives shoppers a defined place to manage access, once Profiles arrive.
- **What to watch:** Profiles are due in the next month, while Gateway participation is by invitation and its features may change. Until people can use those controls, the announcement cannot show how a customer's limits work during an actual agent purchase.
## A separate record for each agent
Walmart says an agent currently signs in through the customer's account, leaving its purchases mixed with orders placed by the customer. Under the planned Agent Profiles, a customer will authorize each agent with a dedicated profile and see that agent's purchases separately. The company says a customer will be able to delete a profile to turn off that agent's access.
The customer will also choose how purchases are approved: every transaction can require approval, or the agent can receive permission to buy within a customer-set spending limit. Walmart gives $50, $100 and $200 as examples, not a fixed list of available limits. Its announcement says Walmart may still ask for additional approval on an order within a limit. The company describes a flow in which an agent starts in its own app, Walmart creates its profile on the first Gateway shopping attempt, and the customer links it by signing in with Walmart. That flow is a description of the planned system, not an account setup we tested.
These controls have a clear boundary in Walmart's [October 21 Agentic Access Terms](https://www.walmart.com/help/article/walmart-agentic-access-terms/d048fc229d7549738d7c05a4317e24d7). An agent using the ordinary Walmart site needs the customer's affirmative consent before acting and a human approval step before every checkout. Under the Gateway addendum, Walmart may permit autonomous checkout within a customer-set guardrail, but may require human confirmation when a request conflicts with it. The addendum says a guardrail is not Walmart's guarantee that an agent will comply; the customer and agent provider remain responsible for configuring and operating the agent.
## What the Gateway changes for agent makers
Today, Walmart says agents may navigate its human website with a browser. The Gateway is intended to give approved agents a direct connection to Walmart's shopping systems and Sparky, using MCP or a similar protocol as defined in the terms. [The public Gateway page](https://www.walmart.com/cp/walmart-agent-gateway/1280482) advertises product and fulfillment data from Walmart, verified agent identities, controlled permissions, category restrictions and rate limits. It says access is limited, by invitation and may be suspended. The page does not publish a general developer integration guide, prices, numerical rate limits or a guaranteed feature set.
Walmart says the Gateway could help an agent find a customer's usual products without giving the outside agent the customer's broader purchase history. Its announcement does not spell out the data fields or the mechanism for that matching. In Walmart's proposed arrangement, the retailer uses the account context while the outside agent receives information needed for the shopping task. The announcement and beta page offer no independent evidence of how that separation works in a transaction.
The terms also set obligations for agents that access the site. On request, an agent must identify itself and its provider; it must honor the shopper's stated brand, price and category preferences and present current price, availability and delivery information accurately. Walmart bars bulk scraping and use of its shopping data for model training, advertising or commercial analytics. It reserves the ability to throttle or block an agent. For companies building shopping assistants, this makes the retailer's rules and access decision part of the product's operating conditions, alongside the customer's instructions.
Walmart says agents do not receive a customer's payment card information and cannot add or change payment methods. The agent provider's own privacy policy governs information the customer shares with its app. Walmart says its normal returns process applies even when an agent does not act as intended, while its terms say the customer remains responsible for payment, returns and disputes. The company also says agents see the same Walmart.com product prices as human shoppers, with applicable offers and fees shown before purchase. These are Walmart's stated policies; we did not conduct a transaction.
The earlier [Muse shopping access story](https://bigchange.ai/blog/amazon-muse-shopping-agent-access) and [TikTok shopping assistant story](https://bigchange.ai/blog/tiktok-ai-shopping-assistant-buy-direct-lead-agent) concern other companies' agent shopping decisions. Walmart's announcement raises a more specific question for its own customers and agent builders: which purchases can an authorized agent complete, through which route, and with whose approval? The published terms answer part of it now. The planned Profiles and limited Gateway beta will determine how much of that control people can use.
