Microsoft prices $25 billion in notes amid AI infrastructure investment

The planned debt offering has broad corporate uses amid infrastructure investment.

The big change

Borrowing adds a potential funding source as Microsoft invests in cloud and AI infrastructure. Microsoft did not specify an AI allocation.

Its quarterly accounts show rising property and equipment spending alongside substantial operating cash flow; neither figure isolates AI.

Debt carries interest and repayment obligations, while the announced uses leave management discretion over where proceeds go.

Follow-up story: analysis

Sam Altman's AI future depends on who controls the agents, the infrastructure and the evidence

OpenAI's chief executive sees a future of cooperating AI agents, faster science and cheaper intelligence. The evidence already shows why making that future useful, safe and broadly accessible will require more than making models more powerful.

The big change

AI is moving from producing suggestions to investigating problems, spending resources and acting through software. That could make research, maintenance and everyday services more accessible, provided people can verify the work and retain meaningful control over consequential actions.

The same shift makes permissions, infrastructure and independent scrutiny central to progress. A system can generate a plausible proof or proposed repair faster than a person can verify it; a capable agent can help defend software or be used against it. More agents do not by themselves guarantee safety or distribute power.

The outcome will depend on who can use the tools, who pays for their physical inputs and who gets to challenge the organisations operating them. Faster intelligence could broaden access to expertise, but competition, public oversight, worker participation and the capacity to check claims will shape how it is shared.

OpenAI tightens ChatGPT violence safeguards

New safeguards and reporting are planned.

The big change

The policy restricts answers for adults and teens.

In independent testing, some adult-registered accounts did not switch into the teen experience. That result comes from specific test conditions, not a population-wide failure rate.

A separate company evaluation found regressions on age-restricted content for two models in difficult test cases. Such results do not estimate how often failures occur in ordinary use.

Malicious Claude Code extension in Cursor

Cursor reports a malicious extension.

The big change

Extensions can execute code before a conversation. Installation source and version determine exposure.

Failed SSH activation can limit access, while other changes still need investigation.

Updating alone cannot establish whether startup items remain or an account was accessed.
