ADNOC has signed an agreement with OpenAI and G42 to develop AI for decisions across the energy company’s operations. The November 2 announcement describes intended uses, not measured results.

The big change

  • The agreement aims to connect technical and commercial decisions; integration remains to be demonstrated.
  • The proposed applications cover field planning and the production-to-market chain.
  • UAE-based inference describes where model computation is intended to run. It does not by itself establish access rules, storage locations or operational performance.

What ADNOC wants to connect

ADNOC says one application would combine reservoir, well and facility data with investment considerations. It projects development plans could take hours instead of months; that is not an independently verified result.

A second would connect production and refining with logistics and trading. ADNOC says agents would assess markets across these stages and humans would oversee consequential decisions; oversight procedures are not detailed.

How the agent layer works

OpenAI describes Frontier as a platform for building and managing agents that use enterprise data and tools. Its product description says agents have identities and permissions. These are capabilities described by the provider, not proof of which controls ADNOC has configured or that any particular output is safe.

An agent is software that uses a model and available tools to carry out parts of a task. Connecting tools can make a recommendation more useful than an isolated answer because it can draw on information from different systems. It also makes the identity of the data, access permissions and the handoff to a person consequential. An operator needs to know which inputs informed a plan and how to check it before relying on it.

Infrastructure and evidence limits

The Emirates News Agency says the arrangement uses GPT models and inference infrastructure in the UAE. Inference is the computation used to generate a model output. The announcement does not identify a specific facility for this project or establish where every related storage, training or support operation occurs.

BIG CHANGE has previously covered Honeywell’s AI agents for facility operations, a related but separate application rather than an earlier stage of this agreement.

ADNOC presents no trial or accuracy results. BIG CHANGE did not independently test the system.
