OpenAI and Google Cloud opened a private preview of three OpenAI models in Google Cloud's Model Garden on October 21. For an enterprise already buying Google Cloud, the arrangement offers a route to use OpenAI models through Google's AI platform and bill that use through its Marketplace. Access is currently limited to selected customers, and OpenAI's request form says the invite-only preview is for approved development and internal testing.

The big change

  • What changed: Google Cloud has become a purchasing and inference route for OpenAI's frontier models. For selected preview customers, OpenAI usage can appear on an existing Google Cloud invoice and draw against cloud spending commitments.
  • Why it matters: A platform team can evaluate another model family through the cloud account it already manages, while its procurement team can account for that usage under the Google Cloud agreement. This changes the route to the models, though preview access and permitted uses are still restricted.
  • What to watch: OpenAI plans general availability in the coming weeks. Buyers will need the eventual model listings, prices, terms and supported controls to assess production use; Google describes Zero Data Retention options and Confidential Compute for these models as coming soon.

What a preview customer can use

Google Cloud's announcement names GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna as the first models rolling out to selected enterprise customers. Google says approved customers can build through its APIs and point local Codex CLI and Desktop workflows at its Gemini platform for inference. OpenAI's access form specifies OpenAI frontier models through the Responses API on Google Cloud for supported development and internal testing, and Codex through the API in its app, CLI and supported development environments. The form asks interested organizations to register; submitting it does not confer access.

The distinction matters for anyone planning a deployment. OpenAI says general availability is planned in the coming weeks, but gives no firm date. Neither company's announcement demonstrates that every Google Cloud customer can turn on the three models today. Google Antigravity and Gemini for business are described by Google as future integrations, not current preview entry points.

The purchase route and its limits

Both companies say the models will be purchased through Google Cloud Marketplace. Google says model usage will appear on a single Google Cloud invoice, draw down existing Google Cloud commitments and count toward eligible Flexible Savings Plans. That is a procurement change for organizations with those agreements; it is not a published saving or a price comparison. The buyer still needs to check its own contract and the applicable listing.

Google's Marketplace documentation says a buyer enabling an AI model must review the terms presented during the purchase flow and, where pricing varies by location, check the listing's regional price. The public Agent Platform pricing page, checked on October 23, lists OpenAI's gpt-oss models but does not list a rate for Astra, Sol or Luna through this new preview. Their price should therefore be confirmed in the applicable preview or Marketplace terms, rather than inferred from OpenAI's own API prices or the gpt-oss entries.

Google also says prompts, context and outputs stay within the customer's designated data perimeter and are not used to train foundation models. Those are Google's stated platform assurances, not findings from an independent test of this integration. In the same announcement, Google places Zero Data Retention options and Confidential Compute for OpenAI workloads in the “coming soon” category. An organization that requires either control cannot treat this announcement as evidence that the option is already available for these models.

The arrangement broadens OpenAI's distribution while leaving Microsoft its primary cloud partner, according to OpenAI. The immediate decision for a Google Cloud customer is narrower: whether it qualifies for the evaluation preview, which models and uses its invitation permits, and what the actual commercial and data terms say. The announced general release and additional security controls are later checkpoints.
