An AI-built app can be ready for visitors while its owner still lacks a clear way to connect Vercel's team spending alerts to that app's usage. On an eligible Pro or Enterprise Flexible Commitment team, an Owner or Billing member can set a team on-demand amount, choose personal alerts, and keep a dated usage baseline for the app's project. This guide covers that operating check after an authorized release. BIG CHANGE has not configured a Vercel account or received a spend alert.
The big change
- What changed: Vercel's Spend Management lets an eligible team set an On-Demand Budget and notify its Owner or Billing members at 50%, 75% and 100% of the amount. Its Usage view can filter to the AI app's project.
- Why it matters: The amount covers metered use across the whole team. A release owner needs both the team total and the app's project breakdown before deciding what an alert means or who will respond.
- What to watch: Existing pause or webhook actions can fire when the amount is reached. Lowering it below spending already accrued this cycle can trigger those actions at Vercel's next check. Inspect them before changing the amount.
Before changing a team setting
Identify the Vercel team that hosts the approved AI-built app and the exact project that serves it. This guide is for a team Owner or Billing member on Pro or Enterprise Flexible Commitment. If the plan or role does not qualify, stop at the usage readback and ask the authorized team owner to handle the setting. Vercel's Spend Management manual lists the eligibility and roles.
Ask the owner to approve a US-dollar amount for the whole team and name the person who will investigate a real notification. Review every affected project and the current billing cycle's spend first. On Pro, the amount measures metered usage beyond the plan's monthly credit. On eligible Enterprise Flexible Commitment, it measures metered usage drawn from the prepaid balance. Seats, Marketplace integrations and separate add-ons fall outside this amount. Spend Management has no additional charge on eligible plans; plan and resource charges still apply, so check your account's current rates. The project filter used below explains part of the team total; it does not create a project budget.
- Select the intended team in Vercel, open Usage from the dashboard sidebar, and set the date view to the current billing cycle. Note the team-wide usage and the displayed projected resource costs. Select the AI app's project from the project dropdown, then record its resource and region breakdown in the same date window. Keep the team and project views distinct. Vercel's Usage guide explains those controls.
- Open Settings > Billing > Spend Management for that team. Record whether Spend Management is enabled, the existing On-Demand Budget, whether Pause Production Deployments is enabled, and whether a webhook is configured. Also note the current-cycle spend before approving an edit.
- Stop before changing the amount if pausing or a webhook is enabled, or if either state is unclear. Have the authorized owner resolve the intended effect of those existing actions. Do not silently disable, enable or replace them. The amount may already have been reached; lowering it below current spend can activate configured actions on the next check.
Set the amount and your own alerts
- Once the owner has approved the team-wide amount and confirmed the notification-only action state, use the documented enabled toggle under Spend Management if the feature is off. Set the approved On-Demand Budget in USD and choose notifications as the action. Keep the reviewed pause and webhook state unchanged. Vercel's manual describes the toggle, amount and action controls; check the actual state after interacting with them. Do not assume there is a separate Save or test-alert button.
- Open Settings > My Notifications for the selected team. Under Team, choose Spend Management. Select the 50%, 75% and 100% thresholds for your own Web and Email preferences as appropriate to the approved response plan. Each Owner or Billing member who should receive an alert must set and read back their own preferences; yours do not configure anyone else's. SMS is optional at 100% and requires a verified personal phone number.
- Reopen Billing > Spend Management and My Notifications. Confirm the amount, enabled state, pause and webhook choices, and your Web and Email thresholds. Check the team's Activity entry for the amount creation or update. Reopen Usage with the same billing-cycle window and app project selected; record the readback time in UTC, the team amount, the selected project's resource and region figures, and the named person who will respond. Keep account identifiers and billing details in your private operational record.
That readback completes configuration. It does not prove that Vercel delivered a threshold alert. If a control's saved state is uncertain, read Billing, My Notifications and Activity before attempting another edit; repeating a change without checking could affect existing actions.
When an alert arrives
The named responder should open the notification, then compare current team spending with the recorded baseline. In Usage, use the same billing-cycle window and inspect the AI app's project, resource and region breakdown alongside the other team projects. Confirm what changed before the owner decides whether to adjust the app, approve a different amount or change project availability. Read back the action settings and usage after an authorized change.
If an expected email is absent, check the Vercel web notifications and your My Notifications settings. Vercel says it may skip an email when you read its web notification first. An absent email by itself does not establish that the spend threshold failed to fire.
Spend Management checks usage every few minutes. Notifications and any configured action can arrive after the threshold is crossed, and spending can exceed the chosen amount. An amount with notifications alone does not cap charges or change usage rates. Enabling Pause Production Deployments is a separate team-wide decision: when triggered, all production sites, APIs and functions on the team become unavailable. Pausing also leaves AI Gateway key use, v0 use and storage-related charges running. This guide does not direct a pause or an unpause. If the team was already paused, raising the amount will not resume projects; the owner must diagnose the bill and resume each affected project separately.
For an earlier release checklist, see our checked first release of an AI-built dashboard on Vercel. If your app came from a Claude web project, the GitHub and Vercel deployment guide covers repository and deployment checks. Neither release procedure substitutes for this team's spending and alert readback.
