Toyota will establish a company-wide robotics organization on January 1, 2027, bringing together expertise and personnel from across the company. Chief production officer Takefumi Shiga will lead Toyota Robotics, the automaker announced November 5.

The big change

  • The new organization will gather robotics functions under corporate oversight and work with development departments.
  • Toyota intends to connect the effort to manufacturing needs and move robots toward practical use and commercialization.
  • The decision reorganizes work; it does not announce a new robot or demonstrate a deployment.

From research to application

Toyota says it wants robots to work alongside people. Bringing dispersed expertise together creates a company-wide place to coordinate the effort; the result depends on what Toyota develops and uses.

Separately, the restructuring will abolish the Frontier Research Center and integrate its functions into the Advanced R&D and Engineering Company and Software Development Center. Toyota does not say that center will be absorbed by Toyota Robotics.

Toyota’s Frontier Research site describes existing work on partner robots and AI-related research, including a human support robot and research into voice interaction with humanoid robots. The site describes earlier research, not deployments by the new organization.
