TikTok announced two ways to move from a video to a purchase on October 5: an AI Shopping Assistant that answers product questions and Buy Direct, a checkout that keeps the purchase inside the app. It also introduced Lead Agent for advertisers seeking customer inquiries. The three tools serve different parts of a sale, and TikTok says access currently depends on eligibility for testing.

For a retailer, the distinction matters. The assistant supplies answers on a product page; Buy Direct handles payment; Lead Agent collects and qualifies prospects. TikTok's announcement describes the broad experience. Its more detailed business post sets out where the shopper goes and what a participating merchant needs.

The big change

TikTok is testing a route from discovery in the For You feed to a purchase directly from a brand, with optional AI help along the way. Buy Direct is a native checkout that uses stored payment methods and addresses, while the merchant remains the seller of record. Shopping Assistant answers questions using merchant supplied information. Advertisers can separately use Lead Agent to answer inquiries and collect contact details with consent. These are announced capabilities in an eligibility based testing phase, not evidence of broad access or higher sales.

Two routes for a shopper

Buy Direct lets a shopper purchase from a brand without leaving TikTok, including from the For You feed. TikTok describes one click purchase with stored payment details and addresses, plus order tracking in the app. The brand remains the merchant of record. TikTok says Buy Direct requires integration with the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) and names Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe among its commerce and payment partners. Naming those partners does not establish that every merchant using them can switch the feature on today.

Shopping Assistant takes a different route. TikTok says it appears on a product page in the app's built in browser and answers questions using information the merchant provides. Its examples include sizing, shipping, availability and product details. A shopper can then continue to checkout on the merchant's website within that browser. The announcement says the assistant can retain the context of a conversation and a shopper's needs; it does not specify how long that information is stored or what controls shoppers have over it.

The distinction also separates Buy Direct from TikTok Shop. In Adweek's October 5 report, the new direct purchase option is described as separate from TikTok Shop. The merchant's role in the transaction is clearer in TikTok's own description: with Buy Direct, the brand remains the merchant of record.

Lead Agent works on inquiries

Lead Agent is an advertiser tool for longer decisions, not a shopper checkout. TikTok says it can answer questions, qualify an inquiry and collect contact details with appropriate consent. Advertisers provide a knowledge base of approved information and set the questions the agent should ask. TikTok plans to place it in direct messages and in lead forms on advertiser owned websites. The company's examples include services and purchases where a person may need follow up before deciding.

That makes the business task different from selling an item in the feed. A participating merchant would need product information for Shopping Assistant and UCP integration for Buy Direct. A lead generation advertiser would need to prepare the approved information and qualification questions for Lead Agent. TikTok has not published setup instructions detailed enough here to turn those descriptions into a tested implementation guide.

Access and unanswered costs

TikTok's business post says the three products are available through eligibility based testing opportunities and directs interested advertisers to their TikTok sales partner. Adweek reports that the shopping features are beginning to roll out to users and brands in the United States. TikTok's two October 5 posts do not provide a country list, a general release date, eligibility criteria, merchant fees or a price for the AI tools. They also provide no measured conversion results for these new products. Businesses can evaluate the documented requirements and seek access, but cannot infer availability or economics from the announcement alone.
