Anthropic says Claude for Government is generally available for US federal and state agencies as of September 30, after a public beta that began in July. The change gives procurement and IT teams a direct contract route for a desktop product running in a FedRAMP High authorized environment, alongside controls for dividing usage and spending across departments. The announcement establishes availability and describes the controls; it does not report how many agencies have deployed them.
The big change
Claude for Government became generally available to US federal and state agencies on September 30.
Tenant admins can cap an organization's draw from a shared prepaid balance. For a bureau configured as an organization, that policy limit lets an agency constrain its usage without transferring funds.
Claude Code CLI and Claude for Microsoft 365 remain in early access. Buyers should clarify how paid seats fit the announced cap on obligated spending.
One deployment, separate department limits
The administrator guide describes a tenant for the agency, organizations that can represent bureaus or programs, and users within each organization. The tenant holds the identity-provider connection and the agency's seats and credits. Tenant administrators distribute seats and set organization spending caps; organization owners manage their own users and settings. A user without an assigned seat can sign in but cannot send messages.
Anthropic says agencies can connect their own identity provider for single sign-on and use SCIM group mappings to assign seat tiers. Tiers can restrict models and set rate or dollar limits. Administrators can set defaults for sub-agencies, including connector and feature availability, and review usage by user and model. The company also says administrative actions are logged, sensitive operations on its side require two-person approval, and usage exports contain metering data rather than conversation content. These are documented product claims, not controls BIG CHANGE has tested.
The billing guide says Anthropic sets up one or more billing accounts with an agency as part of procurement. It can link several organizations to one prepaid account or configure separate accounts. An organization cap is a policy limit on how much it draws from a shared balance in a rolling window; setting one does not transfer money. The account balance remains the final limit for credit-funded usage.
Anthropic's September 30 announcement says agencies buy usage in fixed increments with a hard not-to-exceed cap, so usage spending does not exceed the amount obligated. It also says there are no seat fees. The current seat-tier guide, however, describes Anthropic-managed tiers paid for as seats and self-managed tiers that draw from credits. The billing guide says organization caps apply to self-managed tiers, while paid seat usage does not draw from that credit balance. Buyers should confirm which tiers their agreement uses and how the announced obligation limit treats seat charges. The announcement gives no dollar rate.
What the authorization covers
Anthropic describes Claude for Government as delivered through a FedRAMP High authorized environment. Its government product FAQ says the desktop application connects to a dedicated government environment inside Palantir's FedRAMP High boundary. The FedRAMP Marketplace lists Palantir Federal Cloud Service – Supporting Services (PFCS-SS) as Class D (High), with certification dating to November 2024. Anthropic identifies Claude for Government as a supporting service under that listing. The marketplace profile establishes the Palantir offering's certification; Anthropic supplies the claim that Claude for Government sits within its scope. Neither source approves an agency's specific deployment, and individual Claude models do not receive separate FedRAMP authorizations.
For an agency's own authorization process, Anthropic says it supplies a FedRAMP Secure Configuration Guide through its trust center and documentation for the agency's authority-to-operate review. Conversation history is described as staying on the agency-managed device, while the government product page says there is no web or mobile experience. Security and procurement teams still have to assess the configuration, data category and contract for their deployment. The public announcement does not independently demonstrate data handling or control effectiveness.
Access now and next
New agencies are directed to request access from Anthropic's public-sector team. Anthropic says existing customers can move to the desktop application and import conversation history in the app; agencies can deploy it through standard mobile-device-management platforms. Its current administrator guide explains tenant setup and identity provisioning. Those are the documented prerequisites; BIG CHANGE has not installed or evaluated the product.
The general-availability release covers the government desktop offering, including Claude's work with local files and Claude Code in the desktop app. Anthropic separately labels the Claude Code CLI and Claude for Microsoft 365 as early-access rollouts and asks interested agencies to contact its public-sector team. An agency assessing either integration should therefore treat access and configuration as subject to that early-access process.
