The October 22 DiffDreamer preprint trains one policy with synchronized predictions: a learned model anticipates moving gates, while a differentiable simulator advances calibrated drone physics under the same command. A critic handles gate-passage rewards; motion rewards send gradients through the simulator.

At a maximum gate speed of 2 m/s, the authors report 8.0 ± 1.4 gates in 512 simulated steps for DiffDreamer versus 3.0 ± 1.2 for PPO. This is an author-run simulation result.

The big change

  • What changed: Two rollouts train one controller.
  • Why it matters: Explicit aircraft dynamics let learning focus on less predictable gate motion.
  • What to watch: The policy ran onboard above 100 Hz in indoor flights, but external motion capture supplied vehicle and object positions. Fully onboard perception and noise robustness remain untested.

MonoRace used a different team, course and sensing setup. Its results are not a head-to-head benchmark. BIG CHANGE did not test DiffDreamer.
